"Given the fact that he's the only sinkerballer in the rotation, that’s kind of nice."

Luke Hochevar was as strong as hoped in his first start of spring training, allowing six hits and two runs in four innings of work with one walk and one strike out. Hochevar is hoping to earn a spot in the Royals' starting rotation this season and has been a focal point of much discussion. The 1st-overall pick of the 2006 draft, Hochevar has made three appearances in spring games, working four innings without giving up a single run. In four games with the Royals last season, Hochevar was 0-1 with an ERA of 2.13. There's no reason to think he won't be on the major league roster on Opening Day and the potential ceiling for this young hurler is high, so stay tuned.

The Royals scratched Luke Hochevar from a scheduled relief outing Thursday in order to give him a starting assignment Friday against the Rangers in a “B” game, this according to the KC Star. “Don’t read anything into that,” manager Trey Hillman said. “He came in as a starting candidate, so what more do you want to read into that. He’s as much in the race as he was. The intent from day one was to build his innings.” Hochevar has retired all but one of the 13 batters he's face this spring, so it's clear that he's in the mix right now for a starting role. Let's see what he does over the next couple of weeks. “I’m very impressed with what he’s done up to this point,” Hillman said. “I’ve been impressed with his presence, with his confidence level, and just his perception of being in control on the mound.” Hochevar is expected to pitch three innings against the Rangers.
March 4, 2008
Royals manager Trey Hillman shot down growing sentiment that Luke Hochevar is not a candidate for the rotation, according to the KC Star. "We’ve always had him in consideration as a starter," Hillman said. "We did say that if he didn’t fit into a starting role that it’s entirely possible that he could fit as a reliever." Hochevar has retired all but one of the 13 batters he's face this spring, so it's clear that he's in the mix right now for a starting role. Let's see what he does over the next couple of weeks.

February 27, 2008
Luke Hochevar, bidding to make the Royals pitching staff this spring, pitched two perfect innings for the Royals on Wednesday, this according to the AP. “He was outstanding,” Kansas City manager Trey Hillman said. “I learned a little bit more about him, not only with what he did with his pitches. He was sick in the dugout after he pitched and didn’t say anything to me or the pitching coach. That tells me what kind of guy he is on the inside. That’s the kind of guy we want toeing the rubber." Hochevar, the first overall pick in the 2006 draft, struggled last year in the minors before posting solid numbers over 12.2 innings with the Royals (2.13 ERA, 1.18 WHIP). Hochevar will likely end up in the bullpen initially, but he is a name to file away as a possible contributor this season.

The Royals wanted their former first-round pick to use his four-seam fastball more, get quicker to the plate, improve his curveball and change the way he landed on his front foot. "My curveball is a ton better, my four-seam [fastball] command is a ton better and it's just going to prolong my career," Hochevar said on MLB.com. "At the time, it didn't seem so pleasant, but in the long run, it's worth it." Hochevar is a candidate for the Royals rotation but could also start the season in the bullpen.
February 14, 2008
Luke Hochevar is a candidate for the Royals 2008 rotation and according to the KC Star he also could start the season as a reliever. “I want to break him in out of the pen,” McClure said, “but he’ll pitch longer than a short reliever. I can’t say he’s not a likely candidate (for the rotation). I can’t put it to you that way. I’m going to have to watch him pitch.” Hochevar's four-pitch arsenal features a solid fastball with movement, a big league curve, and a solid slider and change. However, his minor league lines are not impressive. Hochevar posted a 4.69 ERA and a .286 batting average against in 94 innings in Double-A -- followed that with a 5.12 ERA and a .244 batting average against in 58 Triple-A innings.
