Rookie utility player Tony Abreu underwent successful hip surgery today in Vail, Colorado, a procedure doctors hope will resolve the eight months of injury difficulties he has endured, according to MLB.com.

Tony Abreu has been transferred to the 60-day DL, according to the AP. The team also placed Rafael Furcal on the 15-day DL due to stiffness in his lower back, and purchased the contract of Luis Maza from Triple-A Las Vegas, to fill Furcal's spot on the roster.

The LA Times reports that utility infielder Tony Abreu has been shut down for three to seven days, as he experienced tightness in his groin after playing in an extended spring training game Monday.

Tony Abreu is expected to return to extended spring training and begin a rehab assignment soon, according to the Press-Enterprise. He is coming back from hernia surgery.
March 28, 2008
Dodgers manager Joe Torre announced Thursday that Tony Abreu will begin the season on the disabled list, according to the LA Times. "I feel bad," Abreu said. "This was an opportunity for me. I would've liked to have started the season playing." An MRI taken Wednesday confirmed that he has a strained groin, which he sustained Monday and will sidelined him for 2-3 weeks. Fortunately, it's believed this injury is not related to his offseason hernia surgery. With Nomar Garciaparra and Andy LaRoche ailing, too, Blake DeWitt could be the Dodgers' starting third baseman on opening day.
