It hasn't been a good couple of weeks for Max Scherzer. First he was demoted to the minors and now he has been placed on the minor league disabled list due to shoulder fatigue, according to MLB.com. "Basically he needs to strengthen his shoulder," D-backs director of player development A.J. Hinch said. "He's not going to throw for a few days, and get [his strength training] underway. Then we'll see how he recovers. As the plan moves forward, we'll get him back on the mound. I don't anticipate it being a long-term deal."

The Diamondbacks optioned rookie right-hander Max Scherzer to Triple-A Tucson on Friday. The D-backs finished their road trip in New York by playing two consecutive extra-innings affairs where they were forced to use eight pitchers for 12 innings, and according to the team website, manager Bob Melvin wanted to bring up some fresh arms. He also make it clear that Scherzer's demotion had nothing to do with his performance during his first Major League stint.

Max Scherzer made his first relief appearance since being removed from the starting rotation. In fact he took the ball from his replacement, Doug Davis, and worked a perfect eighth inning.

Max Scherzer will be moved into the bullpen to make room in the starting rotation for the returning Doug Davis, according to the Arizona Republic. "We wanted to get him into what potentially could be a prominent role," GM Doug Melvin said of the chance for Scherzer to pitch in more of a setup role than a long reliever role. "We didn't want to look at him just as a long guy . . . We felt he could be a significant piece..."

Max Scherzer isn't quite ready for the big time. In his second loss, and the teams third in his starts, the big right-hander has command issues. While Scherzer didn't allow an earned run, he put his teammates in a position to fail by walking an American League pitcher, who had all of three minor league at bats, with two outs in the fifth inning. The result were two unearned runs and ultimately a Diamondbacks loss.
