How have injuries affected the Yankees in the last couple of weeks? Shelley Duncan was the cleanup hitter on Thursday night. With Alex Rodriguez sidelined for at least two weeks with a Grade 2 strain of his right quadriceps, Duncan assumed duties batting fourth in the Yankees' lineup.

With Alex Rodriguez on the DL, manager Joe Girardi wants to break up all the left-handed bats in the middle of the lineup so Shelley Duncan will bat cleanup, according to MLB.com. "Shelley has hit left-handers in his career pretty well and Shelley played pretty well down at Triple-A. We're just trying to break it up so it's not so easy for them to bring in their lefties," Girardi said.

The Yankees were hoping young minor-league promoted Shelley Duncan could cure the team's woes at first base, but thus far it appears to be an experiment failed. Duncan went 0-for-4 today with two strike outs and three runners left on base in a tight 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Shelley Duncan has had his suspension, which sprung from a bench-clearing brawl in spring training, reduced from three games to two, according to the NY Daily News. Duncan will begin serving the suspension Sunday. He has yet to receive an at-bat in three games this year.

Shelley Duncan will appeal his three-game suspension, according to the Denver Post. "I think to give Bob Watson and MLB the chance to hear the story from my eyes is pretty important," Duncan said. He'll be allowed to play until his case is resolved.

Shelley Duncan continued his impressive start with the Yankees as he hit a solo HR to up his spring numbers to .636 with two HR and nine RBI in four games. “Very impressive,” manager Joe Girardi said to the AP. “He’s done everything a man could do. He’s a ball of energy.” Duncan has started off like a house on fire, but it remains to be seen how much playing time he will be able to pick up given that he is battling Jason Giambi, Wilson Betemit and Morgan Ensberg for AB.

The 28-year-old Duncan made a dramatic impact last year with seven homers and 17 RBIs, but earned some brownie points today in what figures to be a competitive battle for starter status at first base. Shelley Duncan, who had blood clots in his arm last November, is fully healthy and ready to resume his major league career, according to MLB.com. Duncan certainly won't be handed any playing time with Jason Giambi, Wilson Betemit and the newly acquired Morgan Ensberg on hand, but he will have a chance to make the team in spring training nonetheless.
