March 9, 2008
Dodgers manager Joe Torre continues to be impressed with Clayton Kershaw and even went as far as comparing his left-hander to a blast from the past lefty, Sandy Koufax, according to MLB.com. Kershaw worked his way through Major League hitters Mike Lowell, J.D. Drew and Sean Casey in a perfect 10-pitch inning on Sunday, after which Torre acknowledged that the teenager (he turns 20 on March 19) had been promoted from Minor League camp and into the Major League clubhouse. Could he stick when the team breaks camp? No, according to Torre. Torre was saying he was "about as close to 100 percent without being 100 percent" sure that Kershaw would not be in his starting rotation when the season opens in three weeks. He cited the flameouts of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior as cautionary examples of rushed talent and left only slight wiggle room to change his position "if everything else fell into place."
March 4, 2008
Dodgers manager Joe Torre was impressed with Clayton Kershaw's performance in his first big league spring game on Tuesday. "I thought he was terrific. He gives up a home run to the first hitter and he’s got a little smile on his face as if to say, well, OK. He never backed off. The kid’s got a lot—aside from his stuff—he’s got a lot going on there," Joe Torre said. "You have to love his stuff, sure. Curveball, changeup, fastball. But it’s what he does with it more so than what it is, for me." Kershaw gave up two hits besides the homer, but he walked none and struck out three in his inning of action. Kershaw should begin the season in Double-A, but Torre's already said he'd call the kid up if he earns it. So far, so good.
February 26, 2008
Clayton Kershaw might be just 19 years old, but manager Joe Torre said that he wouldn't hesitate to call the phenom up if he thought he could help the team. "I don't think it's an issue any more," Torre said in the LA Times. "I think it's all about their makeup. To me, players become good players when you find out how they handle failure. A lot of it's the makeup of the youngster. But it's happening more and more in the big leagues now, a lot of kids coming up. You don't think twice about bringing a youngster, especially a pitcher, from Double-A." The left-hander posted a 2.95 ERA with 163 strikeouts over 122 innings between Single- and Double-A last year, though he could have to cut down on his walks (4.94 BB/9) before earning a promotion. Kershaw is, by most accounts, the best pitcher that has yet to throw a pitch in the majors, so obviously he is worth monitoring very closely.
