Two days after being mentioned in the Mitchell Report, Andy Pettitte admitted using HGH to help recover from an elbow injury in 2002, according to the AP. "I felt an obligation to get back to my team as soon as possible. For this reason, and only this reason, for two days I tried human growth hormone. Though it was not against baseball rules, I was not comfortable with what I was doing, so I stopped. This is it -- two days out of my life; two days out of my entire career, when I was injured and on the disabled list," he said. "I wasn't looking for an edge. I was looking to heal." Pettitte said he tried HGH on two occasions, but he never used steroids.

Andy Pettitte has made a decision on what he will do next season. The veteran pitcher plans to re-sign with the Yankees for one more campaign, according to the Houston Chronicle. Pettitte considered retirement, but it appears he'll re-up with the Yanks for $16 million, the same amount he could have made had he not declined his contract option last month.

Andy Pettitte has set a soft deadline for his decision on playing year. That deadline is January 1, according to Newsday. "I'm realistic, and I realize that, come the first of the year, I won't be able to prepare myself the way I need to prepare myself for the season," Pettitte told Houston television station KRIV. " . . . I understand the work I need to do to get ready. I won't play if it means trying to short-cut getting ready for the season." Many, including ESPN's Buster Olney, believe Pettitte will retire, but it doesn't look like we'll know his intentions for at least another month or so.

Andy Pettitte declined his $16 million option for 2008, but he has not ruled out returning to the Yankees. "Andy reiterated that he wants to be a Yankee or retire," GM Brian Cashman told the NY Post. "He's just not ready to make a decision yet." Pettitte won 15 games and posted a 4.05 ERA in 36 games (34 starts) for the Yanks this season.

Andy Pettitte holds a $16 million player option for 2008, and he's stated that he'll either return to the Yankees or retire, according to Newsday. Free agency won't be an option. "The New York Yankees committed an awful lot of money to me and put it in my hands, gave me a player option and trusted me with that option," Pettitte told KRIV Tuesday. "It probably wouldn't be real honorable for me not to do anything other than if I shut it down, shut it down or go back and play for the New York Yankees." We'd be surprised if Pettitte decided to hang up his cleats, but stranger things have happened. For what it's worth, Pettitte did say Joe Torre's departure won't play into his decision. He has until Nov. 7 to decide his future.

Andy Pettitte said his back felt fine and he expects to start Friday against Pittsburgh, the AP reports. "I felt good," Pettitte said after throwing in the bullpen. "I can't say I felt restricted at all." He left Sunday's start against Boston with lower back pain and cut back from his usual two bullpen sessions between outings to one. "I've been feeling so good I didn't think I was going to have a problem," Pettitte said.

Andy Pettitte was feeling better Monday and plans to make his next scheduled start after leaving Sunday's game against the Red Sox with a stiff lower back, according to the AP. He is scheduled to throw in the bullpen Wednesday and start Friday against Pittsburgh. "I was concerned because I've been feeling so good, you don't want to have anything causing you any kind of discomfort out there," Pettitte said. "Once it happened, I wanted to make sure I didn't aggravate it, have me out for a long time."

Andy Pettitte threw 25 pitches on Monday in his first bullpen session since being sidelined with back spasms, according to the AP. Manager Joe Torre was pleased with the performance, but he didn't rule out the possibility that the veteran lefty may miss his first start of the season. "If it's the second round, so be it," Torre said. "Remember, it's 162 games, and the long haul is what we're concerned about. So whenever we're comfortable that he's ready to take the ball and go out there, that's when it will be."

Andy Pettitte says his back is still bothering him and he has yet to resume throwing, according to the AP. "I feel a lot better," Pettitte said. "I just want to take care of it and get it right." Manager Joe Torre think Pettitte will be ready for the beginning of the season if he can make one more start, which he suspects Pettitte will be able to do. "I don't anticipate it being a major problem," Yankees manager Joe Torre said Tuesday. "He just got a little tightness. It seems to be pretty straightforward."
