It appears to be unlikely that Alex Rodriguez will be able to return from the DL when he eligible next Thursday, according to the NY Daily News. Rodriguez said he felt no pain in his strained right quadriceps after a full pregame workout on Wednesday, and added that he couldn't wait to get back in the lineup. But it was determined that Rodriguez will need another MRI to be cleared to begin rehab games in Tampa. The team wants to see that the tearing in the muscle has healed enough for him to go all-out in a rehab assignment. He further injured it trying to come back too quickly last month. Manager Joe Girardi said, "It's less likely that he'd be back when he's eligible. There's nothing that's happened, but they want to make sure on the MRI that it's healed enough for him to take the next step. It's always a little bit different when the intensity has to be turned up, when you have to make the quick break and everything isn't calculated. But it is a good sign what he did today."

Manager Joe Girardi commented that he has thought about using A-Rod as a DH before putting him back at third base, though he still has to see Rodriguez run and test himself before he plays him at all this weekend. A-Rod hit his home run off Hideo Nomo, who replaced Bale for his first appearance in the majors since July 15, 2005, while with Tampa Bay. Yankees' GM Brian Casman stated (when asked about A-Rod potentially playing shortstop), "Oh, yeah. We talked about that this winter, if time Jeter would miss would be extensive. It wouldn't be a short-term thing. Derek has a light quad strain, but it's a quad strain nonetheless. We are in no man's land. We aren't sure it's a (disabled list situation) or a three-, four- or five-day thing. Will it be better in five to seven days? Could it be three or four? Or is it seven or eight? We are taking it one day at a time. We could option somebody and bring Alberto Gonzalez. Or go with what we've got. We haven't decided one way or another yet." Alex Rodriguez was not distracted by Jose Canseco's steroid claims, as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI against Toronto in the Yankees' season opener on Tuesday, while drawing one walk. April 1, 2008
Alex Rodriguez is being cornered by Jose Canseco and his steroid allegations, according to the AP. Canseco stated that if A-Rod threatens to sue or goes on television to attack his credibility, he will respond with "MAX," which is a Canadian steroid supplier that he claims A-Rod had relations with in the late 1990's. He also states that Canseco claimed he didn't inject Rodriguez but introduced him to a known supplier of steroids. Lavin also remarked, "Canseco claims that A-Rod was trying to sleep with Canseco's wife." A-Rod countered by saying, "I really, absolutely, have no reaction (to the steroids claim)." Lavin additionally claims on the web site that he obtained the book, "Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and The Battle to Save Baseball," on Monday from a bookstore in Cambridge. The book is scheduled to be released on April 1.
March 7, 2008
A sore shoulder will limit Alex Rodriguez to DH duties until early next week, according to the AP. "Just a little bit," Rodriguez said. "I certainly wouldn’t miss a game during the regular season, or have to DH. But I think right now, it’s just being smart." No problem with being smart in early March. A-Rod was in the lineup Friday as the DH, so it really doesn't appear to be any concern.
February 20, 2008
Alex Rodriguez was just kidding when he stated earlier today that he was "tested 9-to-10 times" last year as part of baseball's stricter drug policy. "My quote from earlier today was taken literally. I was not tested nine or 10 times last year. I was just using exaggeration to make a point," Rodriguez said in a statement through Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo, according to the AP. My intent was simply to shed light on the fact that the current program being implemented is working, and a reason for that is through frequent testing. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused." We had a feeling this was the case, but now we do have some closure on this short-lived issue.
February 20, 2008
Alex Rodriguez was tested for performance-enhancing drugs a boatload of times during his monster 2007 season, the slugger told the AP. "Last year, I got tested 9-to-10 times," Rodriguez said. "We have a very, very strict policy, and I think the game is making tremendous strides." Under baseball's drug-testing rules, players are tested at least twice, and there also are 600 additional random tests throughout the major leagues. If A-Rod wasn't exaggerating about the amount of tests, he was either selected repeatedly for the random tests, or he tested positive for a stimulant in 2006, which would have subjected him to six additional unannounced tests over the following year. Initial positive tests for stimulants are not subject to discipline and are not announced. We're betting A-Rod was just embellishing the number of tests he took, but he'll probably face more questioning on the matter.
