Infielder Olmedo Saenz has signed a minor-league deal with the Washington Nationals, according to MLB.com. Saenz will report to Triple-A Columbus and is tabbed as an insurance policy for several infield positions and adds another veteran option to the mix for a Washington squad in need of support and depth.

Olmedo Saenz could be hanging up his cleats. The veteran is likely to retire instead of reporting to minor-league camp, according to Newsday. Saenz has been a good pinch hitter in his lengthy career but offered little else.

The New York Mets announced today they have signed infielder Olmedo Saenz as a six-year minor league free agent and invited him to Major League spring training. According to Newsday.com, Saenz, one of the most productive pinch hitters in the big leagues over the last four years, is a career .256 hitter (72-281) off the bench with 12 home runs and 58 RBI. Olmedo, a 37-year-old righthanded hitter, was with the Los Angeles Dodgers the last four years. In 2007, he tied for fourth in the majors with 14 pinch hits (14-63, .222) and also had two home runs and 12 RBI.

Manager Grady Little said he would probably use Olmedo Saenz in DH spot over the weekend. He also mentioned that Wilson Betemit could start there when he's not starting at third, according to the LA Times.

Dodgers manager Grady Little has stated that he plans to use Olmedo Saenz as his DH tonight against the A's, according to the LA Times. Saenz is hitting .299 with five homers and 27 RBI on the year.
