Julio Franco retires
Mexico City (Sports Network) - Julio Franco has finally retired.

The 49-year-old infielder announced his retirement earlier this week, officially ending his bid to play professional baseball into his 50's. Franco's career spanned 23 years in the major leagues, and included stops in his native Dominican Republic, Korea, Japan, and finally, Mexico.

Franco announced his retirement to his Mexican league team, the Quintana Roo Tigers, earlier this week, and the league posted the news on its website.

Carlos Beltran is battling the flu and opposing pitchers as he is hitting under .220, but the team believes things will change for the better soon, according to MLB.com. "If your timing is off, you could have the greatest swing in the world, but you're not going to be consistent," hitting coach Howard Johnson said. "That's kind of where he's at."
