Rich Harden, who returned from a month long stay on the disabled list, threw 87 pitches in his first start against the Rangers. The hard-throwing right-hander was far from impressive allowing five runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out five in 3.2 innings of work.

It was a good day for him, and Manager Bob Geren said Chavez could begin a minor-league rehab assignment "in the one or two-week range." He's eligible to come off the DL and join the team on May 27, and Geren said, "It's his goal right now." But Chavez is not sure he will be ready by that date, and said, "If I was a betting man, I'd say no. Before you start throwing out dates, you have to go out and play."

Frank Thomas isn't sweating his .198 average. He figures 2008 will be no different than 2006 or 2007, when he needed a couple months to find his groove. "The same thing happened in Toronto last year," Thomas tells MLB.com. "It took me eight or nine weeks to really get going. Now we're five, six weeks into the season and I haven't really gotten going this year, either. So that's three years in a row it's happened, but the first two, I did get it going, and this year won't be any different." Thomas ended up at .270-39-114 in 2006 and .277-26-95 last year.

Rich Harden was pleased with the results of his rehab start Thursday, as he allowed three hits and a run while striking out four over 3 2/3 innings. He threw 50 pitches. "I was actually pretty happy with my command," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. "That's something I wanted to get out of it, and that's what I wanted to work on because it hadn't been that good in my simulated game. I felt like I was hitting my spots. For the most part, I threw a lot of strikes." Harden, who has been out since April 2 with a strain under his right arm, is scheduled for another rehab start Tuesday and if all goes well, he's likely to return to the A's rotation on May 11.
