Mavericks forward Josh Howard returned to the starting lineup Friday against the Spurs. Howard, who had been out since spraining his left ankle November 6, scored 12 points and grabbed three boards in 16 minutes of action.

Howard was hurt midway through the quarter in a collision with Mickael Pietrus. He took his own free throws, then was helped to the locker room. Club officials diagnosed a sprain and said he wouldn't return.

Josh Howard has asked for a five-year, $47.5 million contract extension, according to the AP. Howard's demands are similar to the deal that Tayshaun Prince signed. Howard averaged more points, rebounds, steals, and had a higher shooting percentage than Prince did last season.
