Theo Ratliff began doing some light shooting on Friday. "There's no timetable," he told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "I'm going to take it day by day and continue to progress with the right attitude and the right prayers and make this thing possible. I'm able to shoot a bit and jump a bit, so that's encouraging." He's hoping to avoid surgery on his ailing knee but won't be back in game action until the joint is up for the effort.

When reached yesterday in Nairobi, where he is doing charitable work with current and former players assembled by the NBA Players Association, Theo Ratliff said he feels "as strong as ever" and "confident" as he continues to rehab from back surgery. Ratliff said he expects to play next season, though he's not sure it will be in Boston. "I feel great," he said. "I've been working out, working with a personal trainer, working out hard four or five times a week. I've been able to play a little bit. It was unfortunate I couldn't do things last year. I'm looking forward to next season. Of course, I will be able to participate in training camp."

Theo Ratliff will have back surgery that will undoubtedly sideline him for the rest of the year, according to ESPN.com. "It's just something that has to be done," he said. "I'm getting the same symptoms going down my legs. It hasn't stopped. The pain was slight when I first [hurt] it, but it got pretty bad when it came back the second time," he said. "But I want to get it over with, because I'm walking around with the same symptoms." Ratliff has played in just two games with the Celtics this year.
