Player Notes
June 23, 2008
Sam Cassell has decided he will return for a 16th NBA campaign, according to the Baltimore Sun. He said, "I'm playing next year, playing my 16th year. After winning a championship, it's just so hard to walk away from that."
June 8, 2008
Boston backup point guard Sam Cassell left tonight's battle with the Lakers in the second quarter with a sprained right wrist, according to the Associated Press.
May 26, 2008
Prior to his appearance in Game 3 against Detroit, Sam Cassell had gone four straight games without playing, according to FanNation.com. Cassell said, "It's very frustrating. This is my first year in the NBA that I sat out in a playoff game. I didn't get any playing time in four games. That's my first time ever. It boggles not just me but anyone around, like, 'Why's he not playing?' I'm not discouraged, but it's tough, ain't no lie. It was tough because I know I can play."
May 17, 2008
Sam Cassell hasn't been playing much lately, but he's as clutch as they come. Throughout his career the cagey point guard has been known for stepping up when it matters most, including in his early NBA days helping lead the Houston Rockets to two titles.
April 8, 2008
Sam Cassell will miss tonight's battle with Milwaukee due to back spasms, according to the Boston Globe. It is unknown when he will be able to return, but he stated that he will be back in time for the playoffs. The NBA journeyman is averaging 10.9 points per game this season.
March 10, 2008
Sam Cassell, playing his first game in Boston, had one rebound and one assist in under six minutes of action. Rajon Rondo had eight assists on the night in a starting role, and has posted at least eight assists in six of the last nine games, so Cassell will likely be relegated to nothing more than a support role.
March 10, 2008
Sam Cassell was activated on Monday and could see his first game action with the Celtics vs. the Sixers, this according to the Boston Globe. Brian Scalabrine will be placed on the inactive list to make room for Cassell. Not the player he once was, Cassell can still turn things up a notch with the game on the line and his presence in a supporting role in Boston seems like an ideal fit.
March 5, 2008
The Boston faithful will continue their wait to witness the new addition of Sam Cassell , listed as inactive for tonight's game against the Detroit Pistons, according to the Associated Press. Reports indicate Cassell is in Baltimore for a family funeral and hopes to be back in time for Friday's game against the Chicago Bulls.
March 4, 2008
Sam Cassell passed his physical and signed a free-agent deal with the Celtics, according to the AP. He's in Baltimore to attend a funeral of a family member, so he won't be ready to ball in the Wednesday showdown between the C's and Pistons. He should be ready to roll on Friday, though. Cassell should only see enough action to warrant a roster spot in deep leagues.

The Republican reports that former Los Angeles Clippers point guard Sam Cassell cleared waivers on Monday night and will be on a plane to Boston Tuesday to sign with the Celtics. "We anticipate him being a member of the Celtics," team spokesman Jeff Twiss said. "He is not a member of the Celtics until he signs, which will not be until he gets into town sometime (Tuesday)." Cassell released lat Thursday, when Los Angeles bought out his contract, was reportedly either going to sign with Boston or Denver. It appears obvious which team won his rights by this report.
February 29, 2008
The Boston Globe cites a source who said that Sam Cassell will be in Boston when he clears waivers at 6 PM on Monday. That, and all other signs, points to Cassell signing with the Celtics. He was released by the Clippers on Thursday. Cassell likely will back up point guard Rajon Rondo, but the two probably will be on the court together regularly, depending on matchups.
February 28, 2008
Sam Cassell was officially released by the Clippers on Thursday, this according to the AP. “After weighing all of the options and after conversations with Sam, we believe this is the best solution for this team,” Clippers vice president Elgin Baylor said. Cassell is now free to sign with a team vying for a championship, and rumors have him linked to the Celtics. Until he finds a team where his role is established, his fantasy value obviously takes a huge hit.
February 26, 2008
The Clippers will give Sam Cassell his wish and buy out the veteran's contract, according to the LA Times. Cassell told the Times that talks have been ongoing and that he could soon leave the team soon. He's expected to sign with either the Celtics or Suns. It will be interesting to see how much playing time Cassell would get in either of those places. He wouldn't be a given to start for either team.
February 24, 2008
Sam Cassell is close to demanding that the Clippers buy out his contract, according to the LA Times. The veteran's deal has to be bought out before March 1 in order for him to be eligible to play for another team this year. "It's getting close ain't it?" Cassell said. The guard has previously expressed a desire to play for the Celtics.
February 23, 2008
Sam Cassell missed Friday's game due to his sprained wrist. He's listed as questionable for Saturday's contest, according to the LA Times. He'll probably test it out before the game to see if he can roll. No word yet on whether Cassell will try to negotiate a buyout of his contract from the Clippers.
February 22, 2008
Despite all the rumors that Sam Cassell might be traded by Thursday's deadline, he's still a Clipper. However, Cassell said he will discuss with his agent whether to try to negotiate a buyout with the Clips, according to the LA Times. Since most people expected Cassell to do just that, it likely played a large role in why no good offers were made for him. At 38, he'd like to latch on with a contender and make a playoff run. The Celtics likely would be at the top of his list. As for the immediate future, Cassell is iffy for Friday's game due to a sore wrist.
February 8, 2008
Sam Cassell has been suspended one game by the NBA for committing a Flagrant II Foul by swinging and making contact with the Celtics' Rajon Rondo during Wednesday's game, according to the Boston Globe. It's a bit ironic, because the same paper reported this week that Cassell is trying to get his Clippers' contract bought out so he can sign with the Celtics. Cassell and Rondo would then compete for playing time at the point. Cassell, who will miss tonight's game against the Raptors, denied the buyout report.
February 8, 2008
Sam Cassell denied a report in the Boston Globe Wednesday that he was trying to have his contract bought out by the Clippers so he could join the Celtics. "There's no truth to it," Cassell said. "I never said I wanted to buy out my contract. There have been no negotiations, the team hasn't come to me about that, I have not gone to them about that." The reporter, Marc J. Spears, stood by his story. Realistically, Cassell probably does want to have his contract bought out so he can leave the pathetic Clippers and provide a veteran presence at the point for a title contender, but he has to say the right things publicly. Stay tuned.
February 7, 2008
Sam Cassell said yesterday that his agent, David Falk, has been talking with the Clippers about a potential buyout, and if that happens, he is interested in joining the Celtics. The 38-year-old is making $6.15 million in the final year of his contract, but he's willing to take a big paycut to join the Celts. "I've earned enough," Cassell told the Boston Globe. "I've saved a little money. I put money away. I just want to win. Winning is the most important thing to me." Rajon Rondo is playing well right now, and Cassell would likely be the backup to him. When asked about the possibility of being a backup, Cassell responded, "Whatever. I've been told it's not who starts the game, it's who finishes."
February 6, 2008
Clippers guard Sam Cassell was ejected in the second quarter of Wednesday's game against the Celtics for a flagrant-two foul, according to the AP. The veteran guard scored 10 points in 16 minutes before being sent to the locker room with 2:54 remaining in the first half.
February 2, 2008
The Nugs have contacted the Clippers about acquiring Sam Cassell in a trade, according to the Denver Post. The Clippers have no real reason to hold onto Cassell, who would give the Nugs some backcourt insurance for the second half of the season, so this could actually come to fruition with the right trade offer.
