Wizards center Etan Thomas was not ruled out for the season following open heart surgery on Friday to repair a leaking aortic valve, the AP reported. “We think the function of his heart and lungs should return to normal,” cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Hartzell Schaff said. Schaff added that most patients recover from the operation in four to eight weeks, but returning to basketball will require a longer rehab. The biggest hurdle is the healing of Thomas’ sternum, which had to be broken to perform the surgery.

Washington Wizards center Etan Thomas needs to undergo open heart surgery to repair a leak in his aortic valve. The procedure is thought to require months of recovery, but is not necessarily career ending. Thomas missed the beginning of camp when a routine physical revealed the heart condition. Thomas started 32 games at center last season for the Wizards.

The Washington Post reports that the reason the Wizards suspended Etan Thomas two games was that he exchanged punches with Brendan Haywood for the third time in the past two seasons, and the second time this season. Thomas was told after the last incident in November that he'd be suspended if it happened again. Haywood apparently popped Thomas with elbow in practice and Thomas came up swinging. "The entire situation doesn't make sense," said Thomas. "I am trying to find my rhythm after missing a month with this ankle injury, trying to put together some decent games, feeling good to be a part of everything that the team is accomplishing, and this cat decides to hit me with a cheap shot during practice and I reacted. I could have turned the other cheek. I guess I didn't." Neither player has much of any fantasy value, regardless.

The Wizards suspended Etan Thomas for two games Friday because of conduct detrimental to the team, according to the AP. He will miss games on Sunday and Wednesday. "This is a team matter which has been handled internally," president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld said. "Etan will miss the next two games and return after the All-Star break. We will have no further comment on this issue."

January 6, 2007
Etan Thomas has yet to get in a full-contact practice, so it's unlikely he will return from his sprained left ankle tonight, according to the Washington Post. "It's coming along pretty good but he still hasn't had any contact," coach Eddie Jordan said. "He's done some minimal one-on-one stuff but he hasn't had any physical contact yet, so I'd hate to see him play a game without that."
