The Charlotte Observer reports that Freddie Jones unexpectedly announced his retirement from football. "It was in the best interest of my family that I conclude my career at this time," he said in a statement released by the Panthers, with whom he had signed during the offseason. He was primarily being used as a blocking tight end in camp, and Kris Mangum likely will step into the starting role now.

The Packers are interested in free agent tight end Freddie Jones either as a replacement for Bubba Franks or as a complement to Franks, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Cardinals coach Dennis Green criticized JonesÂ’ blocking late in the season and let him become an unrestricted free agent.

Freddie Jones returned to practice on Thursday after suffering no serious injuries in a car accident on Tuesday, according to the Arizona Republic. Jones compared his current soreness to how he normally feels after a game.
