The Cowboys announced that both receiver Terrell Owens and cornerback Terrance Newman will be inactive on Sunday for the game against the Redskins. Owens is trying to rest his high ankle sprain for an extra week so he can make a playoff return in the Divisional Round.

An MRI confirmed he has a high-ankle sprain but no broken bones, according to the Dallas Morning News. After scoring a touchdown in Sunday's victory over the, Owens waved a personalized towel on the sideline. "It's stuff like that," Owens said. "People try to make a big deal out of it. It's not any different than Chad (Johnson) going to the sidelines and taking (out) a coat. All I had was a little towel, and now they want to make that into a big deal."

The wide receiver has been recovering from two offseason surgeries on his right ring finger, and earlier in the week Wade Phillips said Owens would not practice in this set of workouts. "I'm surprised but I can understand why he wanted to come out here," Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. "He got caught up in the enthusiasm of being with the team, the excitement we've got about our team. I'm sure he just wanted to go ahead and catch some passes."
