The Chiefs announced Thursday that they have placed Priest Holmes on injured reserve, meaning he will not play again this season, according to the Chiefs' official website. Although the Chiefs don't expect him to require surgery on the joint, they wanted to play it safe with the stud running back. Derrick Blaylock and Larry Johnson will handle the load in the absence of Holmes.

Priest Holmes was to meet with Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil and team president and general manager Carl Peterson last night to discuss his status for the remainder of the season, according to the KC Star. Out of playoff contention, the Chiefs may want to simply shut him down to give his sprained knee time to fully heal for next season. "The original recovery time was four weeks, and we're at four weeks and I don't think he's anywhere close to being ready to play,” Vermeil said. “Is he going to be ready in two weeks? I don't know. I don't know."

It's seeming more and more likely that Holmes will miss the remainder of the season, but that's only speculation. Derrick Blaylock will once again start for the Chiefs, but he'll share time with Larry Johnson.

If you had me on your team, I am sorry to have disappointed you with the news of my knee injury and not being able to finish out the season. I hope with my absence you were still able to rack up the points," according to the KC Star. By noon, the part about not returning this season had been removed and Holmes said he wasn't the one who posted the message. The Chiefs expect Holmes to return but have no timetable set.

"He's concerned because this is a thing he's done before (in Baltimore),” said coach Dick Vermeil, who added that the second opinion was not a sign that the injury was worse than a grade-2 strain. Holmes is not expected to play this week.

"It was a direct hit to the knee, so there was nothing I could do about that,” Holmes said. “The best thing to do was to wait, sit out the rest of the game and then get a brace put on it and see how I do in terms of it tightening up over the next couple of days.”
