Priest Holmes announced his retirement on Wednesday. "I have truly been blessed with the opportunity to play in the National Football League," Holmes tells the team's official web site. "I will be forever grateful to the Hunt Family and the Chiefs organization for the opportunity to come to Kansas City, where the community embraced me from day one." This past Sunday, the 34-year-old running back aggravated his neck issues that caused him to sit out from midway through the 2005 season until midway through the current campaign. With Larry Johnson (foot) also out, rookie Kolby Smith will presumably start against the Raiders in Week 12.

According to FOXSports.com, Priest Holmes re-injured his neck in Sunday's loss to the Colts and his career is in doubt. With Larry Johnson already ruled out for Week 12, this would set up Kolby Smith to get the assignment against Oakland this week.

As expected, Larry Johnson was inactive Sunday, so Priest Holmes started for the Chiefs. He was ineffective, though, carrying the ball 20 times for just 65 yards. He caught two passes for another 14 yards but failed to cross the goal line. Rookie Kolby Smith had only two carries, so you can safely expect Holmes to carry the rushing load for as long as LJ is down and Holmes can stay up on his feet.

If the Chiefs are without Larry Johnson in Week 10, rookie running back Kolby Smith will be asked to help out potential starter Priest Holmes. “We’ve got to do it by committee a little bit,” head coach Herm Edwards tells the Kansas City Star. “I don’t see Priest carrying the ball more than 15 times. Kolby’s going to have to carry it some. He’s played more football this year, counting the preseason, than Priest has. You don’t want to wear Priest out.”

As expected, Priest Holmes was active Sunday and took part in his first game action since 2005. Not surprisingly, he was a complete non-factor in fantasy terms, as he had only four carries for nine yards and one catch for a six-yard loss. If he can stay healthy, he should see more action as the season goes along, but unless Larry Johnson bites the dust, Holmes won't have any real fantasy value.

The Chiefs activated Priest Holmes for Sunday's game against the Raiders. Holmes hasn't played since 2005 after suffering head and neck injuries.

The former best player in all of fantasy football returned to the field on Wednesday after a two year hiatus. Priest Holmes was finally cleared by medical staff, and he participated in his first practice today. Holmes did work out throughout the entire practice, even subbing in for the scout team for a few plays. Coach Herm Edwards did mention that Priest may play this weekend.

Priest Holmes will practice when the team returns to the field this Wednesday. It's unknown when Holmes might be ready for game action. “I don’t know. I’d like to see him practice first," head coach Herm Edwards tells the Kansas City Star. "I’ll be able to answer that Wednesday after practice or Thursday.” Holmes has not played in a game or practiced since October 30, 2005, when he suffered neck and spine injuries.

The Chiefs placed Holmes (neck) on the reserve/non-football injury list Saturday. This means Holmes won't play for the first six weeks, and then the team will have a three-week window in which to activate Holmes or place him on injured reserve.

Priest Holmes lobbied to come off the PUP and practice on Sunday, but he remained on the sidelines. "He's not ready. We had a long talk," head coach Herm Edwards tells the AP. "The doctor said it's OK for him to participate. But in his mind, and in our mind, we felt where he's at right now he's not 100 percent with his legs underneath him. He's laid off for a long time. I told him today, `I'm not going to rush you. I'm definitely not going to rush you.'" The Chiefs are reportedly waiting for general manager Carl Peterson to return to town before clearing Holmes.

Priest Holmes put on his helmet and shoulder pads on Monday, but he is still limited to conditioning drills. He won't take on any contact for at least two more weeks, the Kansas City Star reports. “My timetable changes every day. As they see me improve, they believe I can just jump back out there and get in the pads. But it’s still a process," Holmes says. "I have to recover from 22 months off."

In some surprising news, Priest Holmes has informed the Chiefs that he plans on reporting to training camp, which begins Saturday. Holmes missed the final nine games of the 2005 campaign and all of last season due to neck and shoulder injuries, according to SportsTicker. "In my conversation with Priest, he was excited about playing," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said. "Later, (coach) Herm (Edwards) and I sat down with Priest here in Kansas City and discussed his decision and our thoughts on his return. We may put him on active PUP (physically unable to perform) initially to gauge his football conditioning to see how he feels after non-contact drills. But he indicated very strongly to me that he wanted to play and his motivation was to help the Kansas City Chiefs win a championship." Edwards made it clear that if Holmes did go through with his plans on playing, he would do so as a backup to Larry Johnson. "I believe Priest Holmes is a team guy and has indicated to me his desire to help the team. If he's able to come back, he understands and accepts the fact that he would have a different role than when he was a starter."
