The New York Giants could release RB Rueben Droughns, according to the New York Times. The article speculates with Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward on the roster, the organization has no need for the veteran running back. Droughns, who is an eight-year veteran journeyman type, appears to be caught up in a numbers game in the Big Apple. He rushed for 1,200-yards as recently as 2005, as a member of the Cleveland Browns, so he could latch on as a backup on a different team.

The Giants may be without Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) in Week 12 and will almost certainly be without Derrick Ward (ankle, groin), so they'll need to turn to Reuben Droughns and rookie Ahmad Bradshaw. "He's a proven rusher in this league and we have great confidence in him," head coach Tom Coughlin tells the New York Post regarding Droughns. Bradshaw does not have a carry this year but has returned kicks. The Giants host the Vikings on Sunday.

Reuben Droughns is shocked that he's been asked to score three one-yard touchdowns this season. “It is very surprising to me because I had trouble scoring back in the past in Cleveland and Denver,” he tells the team's official web site. “But it is fun. It is a challenge to me, especially when I have a guy like big Brandon Jacobs, who has done it in the past, on my back. If you want to keep that type of job, you have to continue to score.”

Although Derrick Ward received the bulk of the workload against the Redskins on Sunday, it was Reuben Droughns who got the goal-line work, converting two one-yard touchdowns. He received just three carries on the day, picking up three yards. Although Droughns likely won't figure into the workload much once Brandon Jacobs returns, he could be a decent short-term option if he continues to get the goal-line work over the next couple of weeks.

The Giants are thin at fullback following Robert Douglas' knee injury and will begin to use Reuben Droughns in that spot. "We are going to work Reuben, who has done that before, you know, did it in Denver and of course (Michael) Matthews," head coach Tom Coughlin tells the team's official web site. "I would like to see Reuben this week at fullback."
