While the fans in New York are slobbering to get in line for jerseys and the rest of the world seems happy to have Brett Favre with the Jets, it appears top wideout Laveranues Coles doesn't share the sentiment, according to Pro Football Talk. Sources indicate the two veterans got off on the wrong foot, believing Coles was close to Pennington and felt Favre had manipulated his way into the new digs. The two met to talk behind closed doors and, when asked, Coles refused comment, prefering to deal with it internally. Apparently Favre didn't agreed and aired the full context of the discussion and his perception of the situation to the press, and now PFT reports team sources believe this decision will make things worse.

The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, according to ESPN. Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team. Coles has been a team captain and is one of the most respected leaders in the Jets' locker room. He appeared in 12 games last season, catching 55 passes for 646 yards with six touchdowns.

The New York Jets and receiver Laveranues Coles have agreed to terms on a contract extension, according to the New York Post. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it’s believed the Jets added two or three more years to his contract. If true, this would keep Coles with New York through the 2012 season - virtually ensuring he will finish his career with the organization. For the Jets, re-signing Coles prevents a repeat of the problems during last year’s training camp, when another high-profile veteran team leader, guard Pete Kendall, groused about his contract and was ultimately traded to the Redskins. And now the Jets, who spent a lot of money at the beginning of this month to acquire veterans from other teams, have spent some money at the end of the month to keep one of their own.
March 27, 2008
The New York Jets are negotiating a new contract for wide receiver Laveranues Coles, and barring complications, it should be finalized by Friday, according to the Daily News. Coles has two years, $11 million remaining on his current deal, and he's looking for a long-term extension. He was prepared to miss the entire offseason program, not showing up until training camp, unless he received a new contract. Coles' decision to report to the off-season conditioning program Monday, after skipping the first week to protest his current contract, was a strong indication that the two sides were moving toward an agreement. Stay tuned.
March 25, 2008
Laveranues Coles, who ripped the New York Jets last month for “lying” to him about a contract extension, ended his one-week protest by reporting today to the voluntary off-season conditioning program, according to Newsday. Presumably, Coles’ appearance means his situation has been resolved, although it couldn’t be immediately confirmed that he has a new contract.
March 18, 2008
The Jets and the representatives for unhappy wide receiver Laveranues Coles are close to agreeing on a long-term contract, this according to the Star-Ledger. The Jets receiver, after signing, would report to the team's voluntary offseason workouts later this week. It's unclear what type of agreement the Jets and Coles are nearing, but the person characterized it as a "win-win for both sides." Coles was a no-show yesterday for the first day of the Jets' offseason program.
March 17, 2008
Laveranues Coles may not show when the Jets begin their offseason program on Monday, according to the New York Daily News. He said last month that he wouldn't take part in the sessions if the Jets didn't nix the final two years of his contract and give him a new deal. DeWayne Robertson probably won't be there, either, since he likley will be dealt soon to he Broncos. Chad Pennington, though, is expected to be there, despite being unhappy about being demoted last season.
March 5, 2008
The Jets have spent an amazing $138 million in contract ($63 million is guaranteed) this offseason and used draft picks to trade for Kris Jenkins. The spree is already causing some of the team's veterans to grumble, according to the New York Daily News. "You pay guys you don't even know, and the guys in the locker room - the guys that have your back - you don't give a damn about them," an anonymous player says. Laveranues Coles and Chris Baker are two Jets who have openly asked for new deals. It sounds like Eric Mangini has a trouble a-brewing.
February 28, 2008
The New York Jets and wide receiver Laveranues Coles are negotiating an extension, according to the Daily News. Coles, who has two years remaining on his current deal, has stated previously that the organization has promised to take care of him financially for the past two seasons. Coles has started 44 games during the last three seasons in New York, compiling 219 receptions and 17 touchdowns. He is one of the toughest receivers in the league, who often suits up and plays through injuries that would bench lesser players.
February 16, 2008
Laveranues Coles is seeking a new contract from the Jets. He tells the Newark Star-Ledger, "They've told me for the past two seasons that they would take care of me and now I feel they're stringing me along. I'm not going through this for another year. I've played hurt. I've been a leader in the locker room. I've held the team together in bad times. I was an intermediary between management and the players. I sacrificed my numbers for the good of the team." He has two years remaining on his contract.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum indicated on Monday that the Jets are interested in keeping Laveranues Coles with the team for the long haul. He said in his postseason press conference that his goal is to keep Coles in a Jets uniform "for a long time," reports the Daily News. There had been rumors floating around that the Jets might think about cutting Coles, who is due $11 million over the next two years but has asked for a long-term extension. It appears those rumors were unfounded.
