The Chargers have offered a sixth-round pick for Billy Volek, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. It's likely a deal will be finalized next week.

Billy Volek said yesterday that he thinks there's a chance the Chargers could acquire him from the Titans next week, according to the Tennessean. "I know that they have a lot of interest. I know that they have contacted Floyd Reese and they contacted my agent," Volek said. "There is an opportunity for me there and it is a bridge I'll cross when it presents itself." Volek became expendable after the Titans signed Kerry Collins. It's unlikely the club would trade him to the Chargers until next week, because the two teams face off this weekend.

Although nothing is official yet, it appears Billy Volek will begin the year as Tennessee's No. 3 quarterback, the Nashville Tennessean reports. The Titans are committed to Vince Young being the No. 2 to start the season, and most indications point to Kerry Collins starting the opener against the Jets Sunday.

The Titans didn't give Billy Volek much chance to compete for the starting job in the preseason finale. Volek threw just one pass but completed it for a 45-yard touchdown. Kerry Collins did a decent job in his debut, but it's still not clear who will be the starting quarterback in Week 1.

The Tennessean reports that Billy Volek is believed to have asked to be traded following the signing of Kerry Collins. It appears the Titans aim to have Collins start as soon as the regular-season opener. "I guess they want a quarterback who is perfect in every throw and every read, and that is going to be hard to find,'' Volek said. "I guess they've been unhappy with my production. But it is hard when you are only getting a quarter a game and when you get two quarters in one game like I did against Atlanta and throw for (141) yards, they are still disappointed. I don't quite understand it, but it is out of my control."

Even with the addition of Kerry Collins, coach Jeff Fisher reiterated Monday that Billy Volek was still his starting quarterback, according to the Nashville Tennessean. "If we were going to start and play against the Jets tomorrow, Billy Volek would be our starter and I think it is reasonable to assume at this point that it is going to be difficult to get somebody in a new system ready to play early," Fisher said. "But Billy has some competition. We are going to create competition and we are trying to do everything we can to put the best players on the field."

Billy Volek will likely go into the season as the starting quarterback for the Titans now that the team has agreed to trade Steve McNair to the Ravens. However, there will be a lot of pressure on the coaching staff to get first-round pick Vince Young on the field this season, so Volek will have to play well to keep the job.

Billy Volek recently had arthroscopic knee surgery, but he is expected to recover in time for March drills, according to the Nashville Tennessean.
