The Cleveland Browns have signed defensive back Gary Baxter to a one-year contract, according to ClevelandBrowns.com. Baxter has been working his way back onto the field during the past 17 months since injuring patellar tendons in both knees on Oct. 22, 2006 during a game against the Denver Broncos. "This is very important for me to sign a one-year deal here and to finish something I started," Baxter said. "This has been a long process but right now everything is going well and I'm going to continue my quest to make history. Both Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel brought me back and that shows a lot of loyalty and respect on the Browns' behalf. They know how hard I've been working. I'm running and feeling good--I'm putting in everything I've got. Things are looking very positive." Baxter played in three games in '06 and five games in '05 for the Browns after signing with the team on March 5, 2005. Baxter was one of Phil Savage's first big-name free agent signings as general manager of the Browns. The 29-year-old sat out the entire 2007 season while continuing to recover. He remained on the team's active roster for the first six weeks of the season and practiced on a limited basis before being placed on injured-reserve during October.

Gary Baxter will begin working more extensively on Monday, as he continues his recovery from surgery on both knees. "We'll make up our minds on him at the end of the week," GM Phil Savage told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The decision at hand is whether to keep him on the active roster or place him on the season-ending IR.

Gary Baxter took the field on Monday, although he only took part in individual drills. He tore the patella tendon in both knees on October 22. "It's a huge day for me," Baxter tells the team's official web site. "You saw me out there turning, twisting, cutting, running. I just have to continue to get the strength in my legs and just not think about it. I didn't even think about it out there." He is not wearing knee braces and hopes to participate in live drills next week.
October 24, 2006
Gary Baxter will undergo season-ending surgery today on both knees, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He'll be sidelined for at least a year, and it's possible that his career is over.
October 23, 2006
Gary Baxter will miss the rest of the season with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, according to the AP. He is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday. Baxter had 21 tackles and an interception this season.
