Quarterback Chris Simms didn’t take one snap this season, and wasn’t even active for a game, but has been placed on injured reserve. Last season, Simms had to have his spleen removed in emergency surgery after taking a hit during a game against the Carolina Panthers. Bucs general manager Bruce Allen said, “He’s not at full strength, and we don’t anticipate he’ll be at full strength until the offseason.”

Chris Simms survived the final cut in Tampa Bay, one of four quarterbacks to do so. Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski are also on the roster, and believed to be ahead of Simms on the depth chart.

The Buccaneers sent Chris Simms a message by listing him as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind starter Jeff Garcia and Luke McCown, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Simms has been limited by a sore throwing elbow and is trying to bounce back after missing most of last season while recovering from spleen surgery.

Chris Simms confessed that he has been nursing a sore elbow. “Well, I don’t feel quite like myself,” Simms told the St. Petersburg Times. “But it’s hard for me to tell you guys. I think the only thing I can say to you is I’m going to continue to work and I’m not quite where I need to be.”

Chris Simms is viewed as the Bucs' starter - for now, according to the Tampa Tribune. The team brought in Jeff Garcia over the offseason, but Simms took most of the first-team snaps this week in the Bucs' offseason workouts. "As far as who's starting, I'm not worried about it. It's a competition with myself just to see how good I can be," Simms said. "[But] I have been getting a good amount of the first-team reps."

Coach Jon Gruden didn't rule out the possibility of Chris Simms regaining his starting job next season, but he said right now he is merely a candidate for the job, according to the Tampa Tribune. "I think Chris summed it up pretty good [when he said last week that the Bucs probably will sign a free-agent quarterback]," Gruden said. "There's a good chance there's another guy in town that'll be competing there."
