Chris Simms has agreed to a two-year contract extension to stay with the Bucs, according to the St. Petersburg Times. "It's not official, but it will be Tuesday," Simms said.

The Bucs have made a two-year contract offer to Chris Simms, according to a report on ESPN.com . It is not clear whether the Bucs would like Simms to return as a backup or to regain his starting job.

As expected, the Bucs have placed Chris Simms on the IR, formally ending his season. Simms had his spleen removed after Week 3. The Bucs also activated Luke McCown, who had been on the PUP list while recovering from knee surgery. McCown will be the backup to Bruce Gradkowski.

Chris Simms is getting closer and closer to being put on injured reserve, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Simms is trying to come back from having his spleen removed, but it's doubtful even in a best-case scenario that he's be ready to play before the last week or two of the season. "There's a good chance that his season isn't going to continue, but then again I can only go by what I hear from the medical people," head coach Jon Gruden said.

Chris Simms admitted Sunday that he does not expect to return to action this season, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He made the decision after seeking a second opinion on his recovery from a splenectomy. Simms was informed that the soonest he would be medically cleared to play would be with only a week or two remaining in the season. The Bucs likely will place him on injured reserve this week and replace him on the roster with Luke McCown, who will come off the PUP list.

The Bucs probably will make the move after another week when Luke McCown comes off the PUP list. It appears likely the Bucs will move on next year without Simms, who turned down a five-year contract that would have guaranteed him $10 million, and move ahead with Bruce Gradkowski.

Chris Simms was released from the hospital on Saturday, nearly a week after he had emergency surgery to remove his spleen, according to ESPN.com. He's expected to make a full recovery, but it's uncertain as to when he'll be able to start playing football again.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that Chris Simms is expected to require at least six weeks to recover from having his spleen removed after Sunday's game. Simms received several blood transfusions and was in stable condition in the evening. Bruce Gradkowski will start at quarterback in the interim.

Chris Simms was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Charlotte, NC in critical condition because of a ruptured spleen that he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Panthers, according to the AP. The recuperation time for the removal of a spleen for a normal person is four to six weeks, though it may take a football player longer to recover enough to play. "Chris is doing well and we anticipate a full recovery," team physician Dr. Joe Diaco said.

Chris Simms signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Buccaneers on Wednesday, according to ESPN.com. Simms, who started the last 10 games for the Buccaneers during the 2005 season, was two days away from becoming a restricted free agent.

Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said Monday that he wants both Chris Simms and Brian Griese back next season, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Gruden would not commit to either as a starter. Simms becomes a restricted free agent in March.
