ESPN reports that the Saints have acquired running back Jesse Chatman from the Dolphins in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft choice in 2006. Chatman averaged 6.0 yards per carry as the backup to LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego last season but was cut this summer. Chatman could eventually work his way into a significant role with the Saints.

The Chargers waived Jesse Chatman on Tuesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The official reason was because he failed a physical, but Marty Schottenheimer also complained of Chatman's "lack of involvement" in the club's offseason progream, including rehabilitation from a persistent toe injury last season. The Chargers now need to find a new backup for LaDainian Tomlinson.
