Reports indicate the Chicago Bears are likely to put two undrafted rookie QBs, Nick Hill of Southern Illinois and Caleb Hanie from Colorado State, into battle to compete for the team's QB3 spot on the depth chart, according to Pro Football Weekly.

The Chicago Bears insist they're going to have an open competition for the starting quarterback job between Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton in training camp, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Both players have recently signed one-year deals with similar financials, which places them on equal footing during the offseason. We expect a spirited training camp battle, with Grossman ending up as the likely field general on opening day.

Rex Grossman and the Bears have agreed to a one-year contract, according to the teams' official Web site. Details of the contract weren't known. On a short-term deal, the Bears won't have much invested in Grossman if he continues to play below expectations, and if he suddenly steps up, he could earn a better deal in 2009.

Rex Grossman's agent will reportedly meet with Chicago GM Jerry Angelo at the Indianapolis scouting combine to discuss a possible contract extension, according to the Sun-Times. Grossman, who has one year remaining on his current deal, has been an erratic performer during his five-year tenure in Chicago. He appears to be in the right place at the right time, given the fact there is a very thin class of available free agents at the quarterback position.

Jerry Angelo talked about the prospect of keeping Rex Grossman in Chicago on Monday, according to the Da Bears Blog. "We would definitely like to have Rex back. We’ve talked internally, and at some point we will visit with him and see if we can create a situation that’s workable for all of us. We’ve invested a lot in Rex, and we see him competing for the starting position. Given the familiarity that he has with our system and us with him, there’s no downside. He’s been a good soldier for us in terms of whatever role we’ve asked him to play, particularly this past season. We feel that having him in the mix makes us a better football team." The Bears blog noted that they expect No. 8 under center when the season starts in September. This of course would be quite unfortunate unless the Bears can ignite a fire in Cedric Benson's belly -- thus not having to throw the ball 40 times per game.
