February 29, 2008
The New England Patriots and wide receiver/special teams ace Kelley Washington have agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract, according to boston.com. Washington didn't receive significant playing time on offense -- he played in only 37 snaps all season -- but was a consistent presence on special teams. Washington could be looking at increased opportunities in the passing game next year, depending on the changes in personnel at the position during the offseason.

Not surprisingly, the Patriots informed Kelley Washington that they have no intention of picking up his $4 million option bonus this spring. However, the team would like to bring him back with a smaller deal, according to the Boston Globe. Washington didn't catch a pass last year but is an excellent special teams player.

The Patriots reached an agreement with Kelley Washington on Monday, according to ESPN.com. The deal can be for as many as five years, with a maximum value of $22 million. "I am happy to be a part of such a great franchise, and to have the opportunity to help the Patriots get back and win another Super Bowl," Washington said. "The privilege to play with arguably one of the best quarterbacks of all time, Tom Brady, and to be coached by someone like Bill Belichick is a blessing. I am very excited about contributing to the New England Patriots." Limited to only five games last year due to hamstring problems, Washington caught nine passes for 115 yards and a score.

Kelley Washington is not going to play Monday due to his hamstring problem. So long as the Bengals can keep their top three wideouts healthy, Washington won't be much of a loss against the Colts.

Kelley Washington was downgraded to doubtful Friday due to his hamstring problem, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
