D.J. Hackett is now sporting a knee brace in practice, according to the Rock Hill Herald. He has been slowed by knee swelling, but was able to return to practice Wednesday, and said, "It feels good. I just had some swelling in my knee, so I just took it easy. It swells up, but it's nothing that's hurt, nothing injured."

Despite the rumors, the Carolina Panthers never guaranteed new receiver D.J. Hackett a starting spot to persuade him to sign on the dotted line, according to the Charlotte Observer. "Nah," Hackett said when asked if that had been part of the deal. "That's not my job; my job is just to play, so I don't worry about that." Hackett, who made several fine catches over the course of the five weekend workouts, was talking at the conclusion of Carolina's minicamp practices. He did say that the chance to get considerable playing time figured into his decision. "Definitely, especially when you've got a good quarterback [Jake Delhomme] to throw you the ball. When you go somewhere and you're the only guy and the quarterback's not putting it on the money, he can't really help you."

D.J. HackettÂ’s agent, Kevin Robinson, said his client received a phone call from superstar receiver Steve Smith during his free agent visit to Charlotte, according to USA Today. Hackett said he enjoyed talking with Smith, who helped convince him to sign with the Panthers. Hackett had never met Smith, but they have a mutual friend in current Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch. "They talked about what the offense could be like and it got D.J. kind of pumped," Robinson said. Smith and Hackett could be one of the more lethal combinations in the league, if Hackett can stay healthy and quarterback Jake Delhomme can make a complete recovery from elbow surgery.
