Despite the rumors, the Carolina Panthers never guaranteed new receiver D.J. Hackett a starting spot to persuade him to sign on the dotted line, according to the Charlotte Observer. "Nah," Hackett said when asked if that had been part of the deal. "That's not my job; my job is just to play, so I don't worry about that." Hackett, who made several fine catches over the course of the five weekend workouts, was talking at the conclusion of Carolina's minicamp practices. He did say that the chance to get considerable playing time figured into his decision. "Definitely, especially when you've got a good quarterback [Jake Delhomme] to throw you the ball. When you go somewhere and you're the only guy and the quarterback's not putting it on the money, he can't really help you."
March 27, 2008
D.J. Hackett’s agent, Kevin Robinson, said his client received a phone call from superstar receiver Steve Smith during his free agent visit to Charlotte, according to USA Today. Hackett said he enjoyed talking with Smith, who helped convince him to sign with the Panthers. Hackett had never met Smith, but they have a mutual friend in current Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch. "They talked about what the offense could be like and it got D.J. kind of pumped," Robinson said. Smith and Hackett could be one of the more lethal combinations in the league, if Hackett can stay healthy and quarterback Jake Delhomme can make a complete recovery from elbow surgery.
March 18, 2008
The Gaston Gazette reported on Tuesday morning that there's a good chance D.J. Hackett will be the team's starter opposite Steve Smith. In fact, Hackett's agent Kevin Robinson, said the Panthers assured Hackett that he would be their No. 2 receiver. "That's what they told him," Robinson said. However, the team wasn't ready to declare Hackett the starter, although clearly he is in the mix. "He is a guy who has been productive in this league and is someone we feel can come in and compete for the No. 2 spot," said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney. There is little question that Hackett will start, and he's capable of challenging as the team's top receiver with the presence of a healthy Smith drawing double coverage.

D.J. Hackett has a strong interest in playing for the Carolina Panthers, according to The Charlotte Observer. "His goal is to play for a playoff contender and he thinks the Panthers will be that with their quarterback (Jake Delhomme) healthy again," agent Kevin Robinson said. "And he really thinks Charlotte is a nice area." Hackett, who left Washington without a contract, is scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay today, and Carolina on Friday. Hackett would be a huge boost for Carolina, giving the team a legitimate No. 2 receiver opposite Steve Smith.
March 12, 2008
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have scheduled a visit with free agent receiver D.J. Hackett tomorrow, according to the Tampa Tribune. After being in a deep freeze at the beginning of free agency, Hackett is suddenly in demand. He visits with Washington today, Tampa Bay tomorrow and is scheduled to be in Carolina on Friday.
March 11, 2008
D.J. Hackett, who is scheduled to visit with the Washington Redskins this week, has been criticized in the past for not practicing hard enough, according to the Washington Post. The article doesn’t cite its sources, but Hackett has spent his entire career in Seattle, so the criticism could have originated from new head coach Jim Zorn, who knows him well from their four years together in Seattle. Hackett's visit with Washington also will be his first as a free agent, and his agent, Kevin Robinson, has blamed the relative lack of interest in his client on the fact he missed 10 games with a pair of sprained ankles last season.
March 10, 2008
Free agent wide receiver D.J. Hackett is scheduled to arrive in the Washington area later this week to meet with the Washington Redskins, according to the Washington Post. While the Redskins are usually quite active in free agency, Hackett will be the first free agent to visit with the team since the period opened Feb. 29. "We'll take a look and see if there's something that can work there," said Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations. "It's got to work for both sides, so we'll see what happens." Hackett, 26, could provide a big target for quarterback Jason Campbell. Hackett has played for the Seattle Seahawks since entering the league in 2004, and new Redskins coach Jim Zorn previously worked as the Seahawks' quarterbacks coach.
March 10, 2008
The market for the free agent receiver D.J. Hackett has been colder than many expected, and even the receiver-needy Redskins and head coach Jim Zorn — who coached Hackett in Seattle — appear to be leaning in other directions right now, though that could change, according to Pro Football Weekly. Washington has been extremely quiet on the open market, which is a rarity, but Hackett could provide an upgrade on a team desperate for playmakers in the receiver corps.
March 6, 2008
The Washington Redskins have been in contact with the agent for Seattle wide receiver D.J. Hackett, according to the Washington Post. The organization has had preliminary discussions with Hackett, but nothing has progressed to the advanced stages. The Redskins appear interested in Hackett, only if they can get him for a discounted rate. Additionally, the team still has interest in a blockbuster deal that would add Chad Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald to their roster.
March 5, 2008
D.J. Hackett, who has received little interest on the open market, still has an interest in rejoining the Seattle Seahawks, according to the News Tribune. There are also reports that Buffalo might be interested in Hackett if talks with Bryant Johnson don’t work out. It appears that Hackett’s vast injury history has put his free agency stock in a deep freeze. Hackett was placed on injured reserve missing the entire 2004 season due to a sports hernia injury. During the past three seasons, he has missed 15 starts due to various leg injuries.
March 3, 2008
With the first wave of free-agent receivers off the board, the Titans are expected to try to schedule visits for some still available including D.J. Hackett and Bryant Johnson, according to the Tennessean. "(The Titans) told us Friday they would be in touch with us this week,'' said Hackett's agent, Kevin Robinson. "We were told the same thing by the Redskins, that they would be in touch with us as well. We are obviously not panicking by any stretch.'' Hackett, who caught 32 passes for 384 yards and three touchdowns for Seattle in 2007, has missed 15 games during the past three seasons due to various injuries. However, when healthy, Hackett has flashed some nice skills, and would provide Vince Young with another veteran presence in the passing game.
February 25, 2008
D.J. Hackett is set to become a free agent, according to a report on the Seahawks Insider. “We are going to test the market,” agent Kevin Robinson said. “I won’t rule out Seattle as a destination but we are going to test the market and see what’s out there.” Many teams need help at wide receiver so it appears a bit of a long shot to think that Hackett will find his way back to Seattle unless the team is willing to pay market value to retain his services.
February 21, 2008
D.J. Hackett could be on his way to a reunion with one of his former coaches in Washington according to a report in the Washington Post. Jim Zorn is the new coach in Washington and with the new system they will implement (West Coast), Hackett would be a great fit after spending time in a very similar scheme with the Seahawks.
January 14, 2008
Seahawks wideout D.J. Hackett is looking forward to his chance to move up a couple tax brackets via free agency. "It's one of the things you look forward to as a professional athlete," Hackett told the Tacoma News-Tribune. "A lot of people don't make it this far in football." Hackett will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Hackett will be one of the top free agent receivers this offseason despite the fact he was a disappointment in 2007 because of injuries. His fantasy value next season will depend heavily on where he lands. He may be a popular sleeper once again this summer if he ends up with a pass-happy squad.
January 11, 2008
Seahawks wideout D.J. Hackett missed most of Thursday’s practice after re-aggravating his sprained right ankle on Wednesday, according to the USA Today. Hackett will be a game-time call Saturday. The Seahawks do look like they will be getting Deion Branch back from injury, though.
January 5, 2008
D.J. Hackett had six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's win over Washington. He was Matt Hasselbeck's first read most of the day, in part because Deion Branch was out.
