Coach Mike Nolan will not bench Alex Smith, despite the quarterback's struggles lately, according to the Oakland Tribune. "There's a greater setback in doing something like that with him," Nolan said of Smith. "And I think Trent Dilfer, as competitive as he is and as much as he would love to play, would be the first to say, 'Coach: Bad decision.'" Smith has thrown seven interceptions in the last three games.

Alex Smith was held in check for the first time this season on Sunday against the Chiefs. He threw for a measly 92 yards, and also had two interceptions. Smith had thrown for at least 230 yards and a TD in each of the first three games.

Alex Smith was completely incompetent as a rookie last season, but he was effective in the first game of his sophomore season. Smith completed 23-of-40 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown. He did not have a turnover.

Alex Smith was solid running the San Francisco offense in his first game under new offensive coordinator Norv Turner in the preseason opener. Smith completed 16-of-21 passes for 137 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
