Asked if his season might be over, Smith responded: "We should find out tomorrow."

Quarterback Alex Smith has a fracture of the coracoid process, a bone in the shoulder that is rarely broken, according to the Sacramento Bee. An MRI of the shoulder has been sent to Dr. James Andrews, who operated on Smith's separated shoulder in December. Smith won't decide on a course of action until Andrews looks at the results, but similar fractures have been treated with surgery and the insertion of pins.
September 6, 2008
Alex Smith is doubtful for Sunday's game against Arizona after suffering a setback regarding his surgically repaired right shoulder, according to the AP. The 49ers didn’t disclose what was wrong with Smith, only saying the injury occurred without contact during practice Friday. Coach Mike Nolan added, "He will be consulting with his surgeon in Birmingham (Dr. James Andrews) for treatment recommendations. At this time there are no specifics to the injury or a timetable."

Alex Smith still believes he is competing for the starting job, even though J.T. O'Sullivan will start his third straight preseason game on Thursday. "They haven't said otherwise, so absolutely. I'm going out there treating it like that. You have to," Smith tells the San Jose Mercury News.

August 11, 2008
Coach Mike Nolan will not set his quarterback rotation for Saturday's game against Green Bay for a few more days and is open to adding another player to compete at the position, according to the SF Chronicle. Nolan said, "The door is open to any player we feel makes us better. But there is no one out there at this time that we feel strongly about."
August 8, 2008
The 49ers QB competition is still open, but if Alex Smith fails to impress and gain the starting job there is a chance the team could even go so far as to cut their former first overall selection, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Clara Press Democrat.
August 5, 2008
Alex Smith, Shaun Hill, and J.T O'Sullivan are all listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the 49ers first "unofficial" depth chart, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Kyle Wright is the No. 2 quarterback.
August 3, 2008
Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and J.T. O'Sullivan will split the reps equally over the Niners 15 remaining practices in training camp, according to the Santa Clara Press Democrat.
August 1, 2008
Instead of doing their best to make sure former first overall pick Alex Smith is progressing as a quarterback, the San Francisco 49ers are giving repetitions to J.T. O'Sullivan in order to be "fair" and not give anyone an advantage in the three-way battle to be the starting quarterback, according to Mike Sando of ESPN.com.
July 31, 2008
The San Francisco Chronicle's Kevin Lynch reports that in his 21 years of covering the 49ers, he's never seen the passing game look this bad. Balls hit the ground way too often, and there are too many missed and dropped passes. The running game, by the way, looks terrific, particularly when Frank Gore runs the ball.
July 10, 2008
While we have every reason to believe the starting job is all but settled, the San Francisco 49ers have decided to split snaps with the first-team offense between both Alex Smith and Shaun Hill and will continue to do so as training camp commences, according to the Sacramento Bee.
June 18, 2008
The 49ers continue to have an open competition at quarterback, but the Santa Rosa Press Democrat says Alex Smith is "clearly" ahead of Shaun Hill at this point. Both received quite a few reps in minicamp on Tuesday, while J.T. O'Sullivan was limited to only a four snaps at the end.
May 29, 2008
49ers HC Mike Nolan hopes to have a decision made on who will be the teams QB this season by the end of OTAs, according to the Sacramento Bee. "At this point I'm hopeful. But I won't hold myself to it." Nolan also went on to say that even if a starter is determined in the next month, things could still change. May 5, 2008
Head Coach Mike Nolan said it is possible that the San Francisco 49ers will name a starting quarterback before any exhibition games are played, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. "In a perfect world, you'd have a one, a two and a three," Nolan said. "But before you get to the perfect world, somebody has to win the job. And we need somebody to win the job." Before training camp opens in late July, the 49ers will have 12 practices during organized team activities in June. The 49ers have three quarterbacks - Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and J.T. O'Sullivan - competing for the No. 1 job.
May 4, 2008
Head coach Mike Nolan reiterated on Sunday that the 49ers have an open battle for the starting quarterback job. In fact, it's a three-way battle. "You know what, I’ll say this, probably the biggest impression that I got out of the quarterback position is that it is probably going to be a three-man race rather than just two. I think J.T. O’Sullivan as it goes is going to be in the thick of it," Nolan tells the team's official web site. Alex Smith and Shaun Hill are thought to be the frontrunners.
April 24, 2008
Alex Smith, coming back from shoulder surgery, will be limited from making any vertical throws when the team opens up mini-camp, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
March 28, 2008
Alex Smith, who is progressing nicely from his December shoulder surgery, said he is doing almost everything he normally would in the weight room save a few “over the head” exercises, according to the Sacramento Bee. As far as throwing, Smith said that process has been very regimented and likened his situation to that of a pitcher. He says he has been throwing three times a week, starting with a few light warm-up tosses and eventually working his way to 40-yard throws. “I’m definitely not out there gunning it yet,” he said. So far, so good for Smith, who will be trying to hold off Shaun Hill and J.T. O’Sullivan for the 49ers’ starting job in 2008.
March 26, 2008
It's pretty apparent that the San Francisco 49ers believe the evidence supplied at the hearing earlier in the week didn’t support NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's finding that the organization was guilty of tampering, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Sources claim that the only evidence against the 49ers were records of two "missed" phone calls to Lance Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus. There are indications that the 49ers defended themselves, saying they were calling Rosenhaus because of an interest in re-signing recently released receiver Taylor Jacobs. San Francisco won’t appeal this decision, and plan to put yesterday behind them, while moving on with draft preparations. However, if this story is true, the benchmark for tampering charges has certainly been lowered.
March 25, 2008
The San Francisco 49ers forfeited their fifth-round pick in next month's NFL draft after commissioner Roger Goodell said they tampered with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs, according to ESPN. Goodell said the 49ers violated the NFL's anti-tampering policy by contacting Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about his client during the 2007 season. In a statement released by the league, Goodell also said the teams would switch picks in the third round of the April 26-27 draft. Chicago, which had the 12th pick, will get San Francisco's seventh pick and the 49ers will get Chicago's choice.
March 21, 2008
The San Francisco 49ers want to at least create the illusion that there’s an open competition at the quarterback spot, but the truth is Shaun Hill or J.T. O’Sullivan will have to be dramatically better than Alex Smith to become the opening-day starter, according to the Sacramento Bee. The 49ers simply have too much invested in Smith, including their reputations, not to give him at least a slight edge. Smith is smart, more physically gifted than his two challengers, and perhaps most important, more hardened after a nightmarish 2007 season. This report contradicts what head coach Mike Nolan said yesterday about it being an open competition, but we tend to agree that Smith is likely the frontrunner for the starting job.
March 20, 2008
San Francisco coach Mike Nolan made it clear earlier this week that there will be an open competition for the team's starting quarterback position in training camp and the preseason between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill, according to NFL.com. "I have no favorites, I have no favorites at all," Nolan said. "You want to get the best one out there, because the players are looking. You're a football team, it's about winning. And your football team performs better when they know that jobs are won or lost on the field. That's where this will happen." Nolan added that on-field production would be the determining factor as to which player wins the job and that Smith's status as a former No. 1 pick will play no role in the final decision.
March 10, 2008
Alex Smith is feeling a lot better these days and is enthusiastically welcoming the challenge of battling Shaun Hill for the starting quarterback job in San Francisco, according to Pro Football Weekly. Smith, who wore a sling for six weeks following surgery in December, has begun throwing the football with his range of motion back to normal. Mike Martz has done wonders for quarterbacks in the past, so whoever wins the open competition could provide some upside in 2008 fantasy drafts.
February 28, 2008
Alex Smith received an unexpected boost in confidence on Thursday as the team exercised an option in his contract that basically guarantees that he will be with the team through 2010, this according to the AP. “It just shows that we believe in him to be our guy,” GM Scott McCloughan said. “He and Shaun [Hill] are going to go out there and compete, and the winner of that is going to be a good quarterback for us.” Very interesting. The team now has two QB under substantial money deals, and while fans are ready to declare Hill the best option, it is clear that the Niners want to give Smith at least one more chance to recapture the starting spot with a healthy shoulder.
February 22, 2008
San Francisco 49ers HC Mike Nolan discussed protection schemes during the Indianapolis scouting combine, according to SFGate. Nolan said one of the new aspects of OC Mike Martz’s scheme would be to leave the protection adjustments to the quarterback instead of the offensive line, most notably the center. "A lot is on the quarterback's shoulders in Mike's system," Nolan said. "To be honest with you, that allows the other guys to play at a higher level. All it takes is one guy out of the other 10 to not know what's going on and the quarterback will get hit." We will believe it when we see the improved protection schemes, because Martz’s offense is known for multiple wide receiver sets. It’s notorious for minimum protection of the field general, resulting in an abundance of quarterback sacks.
February 22, 2008
The NFL is investigating a charge by the Chicago Bears that the San Francisco 49ers tampered last year in dealings with LB Lance Briggs, according to Yahoo! Sports. The Bears grievance claims the 49ers held contract negotiations with Briggs’ agent Drew Rosenhaus – interfering with a player already under contract. Tampering claims are commonplace in the NFL, and rarely are there any penalties levied in these cases. However, if the 49ers were found to be guilty of the accusations, they could be fined or lose a draft pick.
February 13, 2008
Alex Smith, who underwent shoulder surgery in December, is rehabbing and progressing well, according to The Press Democrat. Smith is expected to be at full strength for the beginning of organized team activities. Reports out of San Francisco believe that Smith and backup Shaun Hill will compete for the starting job next year. However, Hill will have to do more than just outperform Smith during Training Camp and the exhibition schedule - Smith will have to completely meltdown in the Mike Martz playbook.
