The smooth travels for Aaron Rodgers came to an end on Saturday night, completing nine of 16 passes for 58 yards and sacked four times by San Francisco in a devastating 34-6 loss, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. San Francisco’s complex defense, which regularly shifts from a 3-4 front to a 4-3 front in an attempt to create indecision in blocking assignments, got the upper hand on Rodgers. According to offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Rodgers audibled out of a number of running plays. Often he found nothing downfield. His hesitation made him look like a backup quarterback who hadn’t played in a long time and often he read the pass rush incorrectly, thinking he had time to pump and reload when he didn’t.

Here in fantasy sports land, we care far more about the numbers players produced than the numbers on their jerseys. But that is certainly not true in the case of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is taking a lot of heat from fans, including being cursed at by children, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. I'm driving up to the (parking lot) gate and punching in my punch code and somebody says ‘F.U.' to me. That kind of bothers me. Or when a little kid is yelling swear words at me. That kind of gets to me. The boos, they expect a high level of play and they miss Brett Favre. I understand that. But the ‘F.U.' and the little kids saying swear words to me, I don't understand that," Rodgers said.

Aaron Rodgers was sharp in Friday's morning practice, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He was 10-of-15 with two touchdowns, and was 6-of-8 on his two-minute drive. Greg Jennings made an incredible one-handed grab for a touchdown to end practice. Rodgers had scrambled on the play, and then zipped a ball in late and a little high to Jennings, but he made it work.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has performed well so far in training camp, and the Packers are happy with his progress, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He's protecting the ball. He's throwing the ball well. He's handling the offense. He's checking plays," said offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.

Coach Mike McCarthy reiterated that Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback of the Packers, according to the AP. McCarthy stated, "Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. That's been stated over and over again. I hope we can finally understand that. That's where we are as an organization and as a head coach of the Green Bay Packers." When asked if Brett Favre had a chance to overake him for the spot, McCarthy noted, "it’s more complicated than that."

Packers' GM Ted Thompson stated that Aaron Rodgers is the Packers' starting quarterback, and Brett Favre will have to hold the clipboard if he is on the team this season, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Thompson added, "We have to go with what's real. We don't know what the options are right now. We'll talk about it internally. It's all guess work. This is a very difficult spot we're in. It's a very volatile situation and we don't have all the answers yet. We have moved forward with Rodgers. So we'll see where it goes."

Aaron Rodgers is not distracted by the news swirling that Brett Favre wants to return to the NFL, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Aaron Rodgers said he is ready for the spotlight following the retirement of future Hall of Famer Brett Favre, according to the AP. He commented, "I know the pressure I’m under. I know who I’m following. I know that it’s a tough situation and a lot of people are expecting me to fail outside of this locker room. I’m just trying to get the guys we’ve got here now to believe in me. I know the comparisons, probably my entire career, as long as I’m a Packer and as long as I play in the NFL, my connection will be the guy who followed Brett Favre. I think that’s probably one of the most underestimated parts of my game is that I have spent the last three offseasons exclusively here and I’ve put in a lot of time and a lot of hard work into figuring out this offense. I think I’ll be ready to go once we can finally lace them up for real. I think I’ve always been a guy who wants to be involved not only in working together but be involved in the lives of these guys. I want us to be a connected team, on and off the field."

Head coach Mike McCarthy will adjust the offense to mesh with quarterback Aaron Rodgers' strengths and weaknesses as they become more apparent; however, he suggested the changes will be relatively minor, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. His comments about Rodgers' athleticism suggest he might run more bootleg-type passes than he did with Favre. Also, drafting Jordy Nelson with the top pick suggests the spread passing attack with four and five receivers will remain a staple in the offense to take advantage of the team's best playmakers in Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones and, perhaps now, Nelson. "(The spread personnel) is not the starting point of our offense," McCarthy said. "But we definitely have the players to do that, and it takes advantage of the strength of our perimeter players, because it puts the ball in their hands quickly and gives them the ability to make yards after the catch."

With Brett Favre riding off into the sunset, the Green Bay Packers hit this year's NFL Draft noting their offensive needs and wasted no time in addressing the situation, using their top two picks to bolster their efforts to score points. Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson won't pass up a worthwhile passer in this weekend's NFL draft. And if the Packers end up taking a quarterback with the 30th pick in the first round, Thompson said it shouldn't be interpreted as a lack of confidence in new starter Aaron Rodgers, according to ESPN. "If we take a player at any other position, it's no slight on the players that we have at those positions," Thompson said in his pre-draft news conference Monday. "Aaron, he's comfortable in his own skin. He understands the NFL is the NFL."
April 2, 2008
Mike McCarthy acknowledged that rather than bringing in an aging veteran to backup Aaron Rodgers, he could acquire his backup through the draft, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I'm not opposed to it," McCarthy said. "To me, it's experience or talent. I've always developed quarterbacks leaning toward the talent. Youth has never scared me away." The Packers have a pick at the end of the first round (No. 30) and a pair of seconds (Nos. 56 and 60) with which to consider a quarterback and they could come away with someone to both back up and challenge Rodgers. Some of the candidates are Brian Brohm, Joe Flacco, Chad Henne, John David Booty and Andre Woodson.

Among the rumors circulating at the owners’ meetings was the Green Bay Packers' apparent interest in veteran quarterbacks A.J. Feeley of the Philadelphia Eagles and J.P. Losman of the Buffalo Bills, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The Packers definitely have a need with only Dalton Bell on the depth chart behind Aaron Rodgers.

The Green Bay Packers were awarded a fourth-round draft pick (135th overall) when the league handed out its compensatory picks at the NFL annual owners meetings, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The compensatory pick is based on the Packers’ net losses in free agency the previous year. Last season, Green Bay lost running back Ahman Green and tight end David Martin and signed cornerback Frank Walker. The additional selection gives Green Bay eight picks in the April 26-27 draft. They have a pick in every round except the sixth — plus an extra pick in the second and fourth rounds.

Having overseen a turnaround from a 4-12 record in 2005 to a 13-3 mark in 2007 and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson was named the George Young NFL Executive of the Year by The Sporting News, according to Packers.com. "I'm honored to receive this award on behalf of the Green Bay Packers," Thompson said. "We view this as a team honor and feel the coaches, players and staff should all be very proud of the job they've done in helping this franchise succeed. This award is a credit to their dedication and is particularly special because it's named for George Young, who was a tremendous champion for the NFL and a person I greatly admired." Thompson becomes the second member in the history of the organization to receive the honor, joining former GM Ron Wolf, who was recognized following the 1992 season and who, coincidentally, hired Thompson that year as the former linebacker entered an NFL front office for the first time.

The Green Bay Packers' brain trust believes that former first-round draft pick Aaron Rodgers is more than ready to step into the spotlight now that Brett Favre has finally retired, but there are concerns about his ability to withstand punishment, according to Pro Football Weekly. Despite only taking 59 career snaps, Rodgers has been sidelined on two different occasions with a broken foot and a pulled hamstring. With Craig Nall as the only other option under center, the team has been rumored to be looking at numerous options at backup quarterback including Quinn Gray, Mark Brunell and Gus Frerotte. It’s also possible that the organization might burn a first day draft pick on a quarterback to round out the depth chart.

Aaron Rodgers is expected to make a smooth transition as he takes over as the Packers starting quarterback, as believed by quarterbacks coach Tom Clemens who stated, "Aaron wants to play, so I am sure he is excited about that. I am not going to say anything magical to him. He knows he has to get ready because he is now the guy, and we'll move forward. He is going into his fourth year and I think he is up for the challenge". Rodgers himself mentioned that you can't replace a legend, and all he can do is try to be the best quarterback he can be, this according to PackersNews.com.
