Kyle Orton went a pedestrian 13-for-21 for 150 yards with no touchdowns, but the signal-caller didn't make any mistakes in the Bears 29-13 win over the Colts. Unlike his predecessor, Rex Grossman, Orton orchestrated a plan that coach Lovie Smith has been preaching for years. Run the football, protect the football, and stop the run on defense.

After starting Kyle Orton against the Chiefs and Rex Grossman versus the Seahawks, Bears coach Lovie Smith has yet to announce which quarterback will open Thursday night's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers at Soldier Field, according to the team's official website. “We’ll evaluate all of that,” Smith said following Saturday night’s 29-26 overtime loss in Seattle. “We had made a decision how we were going to start the first two games and that’s about as far as we’ve gone. We’ll let you know on everything else.”

Rex Grossman is the starter in name for the Bears and is currently battling Kyle Orton for the first-team role. However, Rototimes sources report that it isn't Grossman that will play his way into the role, it's Orton job to lose. He will have to play his way off the top of the depth chart. A decision likely won't be made until both signal-callers get plenty of preseason reps.
May 20, 2008
Kyle Orton took the majority of the reps at quarterback during the Bears' first OTA, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Lovie Smith mentioned that he and Rex Grossman are both on equal ground in competition for the starting job. Grossman could receive most of the work with the first-team on Tuesday.

Kyle Orton is confident he will be the Bears' starting quarterback in 2008, if given a fair shot to compete for the job, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Orton said, "All I care about is if I get my chance. If I get my chance, I'm confident that I will win the job and play well. I don't really pay attention to talk of a not-so level playing field. I hear through third parties and all that stuff but it doesn't affect my mind-set or my thoughts as a player or anything like that. That's what you've got to believe. I've been told by the coaches that's how it's going to be, so I think it is. I think I've earned that chance to have a fair competition. It's the most excited I've been going into a season. I've put in a lot of work in the offseason and I'm just really excited where my game is at. I'm throwing the football really well. I haven't really asked how the competition will break down. I'm assuming it's going to be 50-50 and we'll go from there."

Kyle Orton signed a one-year extension with the Bears, according to the AP. It would keep the quarterback under contract through 2009. Rex Grossman inked a one-year, $3 million deal Saturday, and Orton's deal is expected to be similar in value. Speculation is rampant that if the season started today Orton would likely be the Bears' starter under center. It's unlikely he's do anything to make Bears' fans forget about Grossman, as both signal callers are pretty worthless.
