The Redskins signed Jerome Mathis on Friday. The oft-injured receiver/return man could end up returning kicks but won't be a factor in the passing game.

Assault charges against former Houston Texans receiver Jerome Mathis have been dropped, according to ESPN. Mathis was charged last month with assaulting his pregnant 26-year-old common-law wife. Erica Smith told Brazoria County deputies that Mathis had pushed her onto a bed and started choking her. But Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne said Smith later asked officials to drop the charges. Mathis spent the last season on injured reserve. The Texans haven't renewed his contract, which makes Mathis an unrestricted free agent.

The Texans placed wide receiver and return man Jerome Mathis on injured reserve on Saturday. Mathis has a "hot spot" in the lower part of his left leg that has been causing him pain.

Jerome Mathis is not expected to play on Sunday due to a sore lower leg, according to the Houston Chronicle. With the Texans WR corps hit hard by injuries, Mathis could have seen some added looks this week, but that won't be the case now.
