The Patriots released tight end Marcellus Rivers on Tuesday, and are likely to fill the opening on the 53-man roster with wide receiver Chad Jackson , reports the Boston Globe. Jackson, who began the season on the physically unable to perform list, started practicing again three weeks ago, so the Pats have to make a move to put him on the active roster or shut him down for the season. He's recovering from a torn ACL suffered late last season and is highly unlikely to see significant action behind the All-World receivers lined up ahead of him on the depth chart.

Chad Jackson was removed from the physically unable to perform list and has been practicing all week with the team. "He knows a lot more this year than he knew last year going into the season or even at this point," Bill Belichick told the Boston Globe. "He works hard on his preparation and assignments and he's matured a lot and he's made a lot of progress." Jackson tore his ACL in last year's AFC Championship game.

Wide receiver Chad Jackson is expected to open training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to recover from offseason ACL surgery. According to the Boston Herald, Jackson is able to sprint on his surgically-repaired knee but can't yet cut or change direction.

Chad Jackson is recovering well enough from his torn ACL that he might actually be ready when the season gets underway, according to the Boston Globe. He sustained the injury in February, so that would be a pretty quick turnaround. Regardless, with all of the offseason additions at receiver, Jackson won't be much of a factor even if 100 percent.

Chad Jackson could be running by the time the Patriots hold their veteran minicamp in June and should be cleared for contact by the opening of training camp in mid-July, the Boston Herald reports. Jackson tore an ACL in the AFC Championship Game loss at Indianapolis.
