The Chicago Bears will get down to business with Devin Hester's agent, Eugene Parker, this week and try to reach a long-term deal, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Devin Hester is unhappy with his contract, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He wants to be paid among the league's best, and pointed out that he has scored the most touchdowns on the team over the last two seasons. He is by far the best return man in the NFL, and was a huge contributor during their recent run to the Super Bowl.

Lovie Smith said the plan is to have receiver Devin Hester return fewer kicks; using him on special teams on a limited basis, according to the Chicago Tribune. "I think Devin Hester can pretty much be what he wants to be," Smith said. "Can he be a three-down receiver? Definitely." Smith indicated Danieal Manning could help the Bears on kick returns, and mentioned restricted free-agent receiver Rashied Davis as another possible return man. "We're in a game and we need a play and they're kicking the ball off to us, there is a good chance you are going to see him [Hester] back there," Smith said. "They're punting the ball to us and we need a big play, no matter what part of the game, there is a good chance you are going to see him back there." Utilizing Hester less on special teams would negatively impact the value of the Bears’ defense in fantasy leagues that start team defenses.

Lovie Smith wants to increase Devin Hester’s role in the offense as a wide receiver, but not at the expense of decreasing his impact in the return game, according to the Palm Beach Post. “Can he be a three-down receiver? Definitely,” Smith said. “But we have a guy that’s special at something. I don’t think you automatically take him off it to play somewhere else. … It’s been a long time since anyone has been able to (return kicks) full time and be a full-time receiver, too.” Therein lies the rub, as increasing his presence in the offense, could decrease his effectiveness on special teams. Look for Smith to find some type of balance, which makes Hester a questionable prospect at wide receiver in 2008, despite the Bears’ need for playmakers in the passing game.
