Calvin Johnson noted that he needed Vicodin to aid his deep bone bruise in his lower back sustained early last season, according to MLive.com. He said, "I was on meds the rest of the season. I was taking Vicodin twice a game just to get through the game. I stayed hurt the whole season, probably because I was trying to come back too soon. But I'm not going to be the kind of guy who's going to say, 'I can't do this or this because I'm hurt." He never recovered to full strength during the season and added, "I had almost 800 yards last year and I'm not saying I could double that, but I can put up 1,200 yards. I did that in college in 14 games. I expect the highest out of myself, and I put big numbers in front of myself as goals. I'll get 1,000 yards, no doubt."

Calvin Johnson can still feel the back injury that he sustained as a rookie last season, according to the Detroit News. Johnson stated, "I still feel it, but I can do everything I need to do on the field. I know it's there but it doesn't hurt. That's what really stopped me. That's really why I couldn't run. It bothered me the whole season. I'd take a little something every week just to get through the game. When you try to push off the ball and stuff, it hurts." He also expects to make a bigger impact this season, as he stated, "Last year, I'd say I could have done twice as good. If the top is 10, I'd say I was a five last year. I expect a 10 this year." Sounds like Johnson will be good to go heading into his second pro season in 2008, and his fantasy stock will continue to rise.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson looks good after being bothered by a back injury most of his rookie season, according to USA Today. "It's kind of funny watching him run the conditioning with everybody," quarterback Jon Kitna said, "because he's beating everybody by a pretty good margin and it doesn't even look like he's running very hard." Johnson, who underachieved during his rookie campaign, missed one game and was limited in several others by the back injury. However, he did post four or more receptions in four of the final six games of the 2007 season.

Former Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz said that the back injury Calvin Johnson had last season was far worse than originally believed and that the offensive system didn't stymie the rookie's production, according to Mlive.com. "Not at all, just the opposite in fact. He did a great job in preparation," Martz said. "Calvin got hurt in that (Week 3) Philadelphia game and he never recovered the rest of the year. He was never 100 percent the rest of the year. In fact, there were games he really struggled to play and maybe shouldn't have played, I don't know. It was important to him to play and you've got to give him credit. He fought through it pretty good." It'll be very interesting to see how he performs in his second NFL season and with a new coordinator. As it was, he pulled in 48 catches for 756 yards and four TDs as a rook. Martz also said that leaving the Lions was only technically a mutual decision: "When they fired me, then it became mutual -- I agreed that I should probably go. That's how it became mutual."

Calvin Johnson was not listed on Tuesday’s injury report despite his ongoing back problems. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz implied on Monday that Johnson’s involvement in the offense has been limited by the injury he suffered back in Week 3.
