The Bucs have decided to replace Brad Johnson as the starting quarterback this week with Chris Simms, according to the St. Petersburg Times. It's possible Johnson could be traded before the deadline, but regardless, it appears unlikely he will be back with the team for next season.

Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden refused to guarantee that Brad Johnson would start against the Saints this week, according to the Tampa Tribune. In fact, the report states that Gruden may be leaning towards giving Brian Griese a chance to run the offense.

Bucs coach Jon Gruden denied reports the team was considering bringing in other quarterbacks to compete with or replace Brad Johnson as the starter, according to the St. Petersburg Times. "There's no truth to these reports. None," Gruden said. "Brad Johnson is our starting quarterback, and we'll back that up in a few months."

The Tampa Tribune reports that the Bucs are considering staging an open competition for the quarterback job next season, possibly trying to bring in Rich Gannon or Mark Brunell to compete with Brad Johnson. Brunell is almost certain to be released by the Jags and the Raiders might consider releasing Gannon, especially if they spend the No. 2 pick in the draft on Eli Manning or Ben Roethlisberger.
