LaMarr Woodley, DE Wednesday 5/7, 9:20 AM CT
LaMarr Woodley, the Pittsburgh Steelers' most productive pass rusher per play as a rookie last season, will get a chance to become the starting left outside linebacker, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Rashard Mendenhall, RB Tuesday 5/6, 12:31 PM CT
Rashard Mendenhall, who injured his hamstring during the recent Pittsburgh Steelers’ mini-camp practices, says he expects to be fully recovered when the team reconvenes for the organized team activity sessions May 20-22 at the team's South Side facility, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Limas Sweed, WR Tuesday 5/6, 11:57 AM CT
X marks the spot for wide receiver Limas Sweed. In football speak, the X position is the split end and that’s where the rookie receiver will line up, behind Santonio Holmes, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Limas is at X," offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said. "We can move Santonio around, which we started doing a lot last year because he plays in the slot very well. Limas can play in the slot, no problem. Hines can obviously play everywhere. Nate [Washington] can play everywhere -- he's had to play every position on the team the last two years; he's lined up at X, F, Y and Z."
Rashard Mendenhall, RB Monday 5/5, 3:40 PM CT
University of Illinois star running back Rashard Mendenhall -- who was just drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers -- was robbed at gunpoint early Monday along the South Side Chicago lakefront, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Mendenhall, 20, was walking along the lake near 39th Street at 2 a.m. with another person when two people robbed him of his phone, cash and wallet, sources familiar with the investigation said. "It was obviously a scary moment," said his agent, Mike McCartney of Priority Sports. "But he is fine. He is doing great. He said he doesn't have anything that is worth his life."
Lawrence Timmons, LB Monday 5/5, 10:09 AM CT
Competition began on the field this weekend at inside linebacker, where 2007 first-round draft pick Lawrence Timmons is trying to wrest the starting job away from Larry Foote, who has held it the past four seasons, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "That potentially could be intense because Lawrence has put himself in position to compete," head coach Mike Tomlin said. "It's been a good weekend for him, it's the difference between night and day between what he showed us this weekend and what he showed us last year. The pedigree is still there, and we're excited about what he brings to the table.”
Troy Polamalu, S Sunday 5/4, 11:47 PM CT
Troy Polamalu hung around the minicamp this weekend, but he won't practice with the team until training camp, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirms. He is coming off a right knee injury that required minor surgery and rehab to repair a torn PCL. Polamalu will once again spend his offseason in California, where he uses some non-traditional training methods rather than weights and machines.
Hines Ward, WR Sunday 5/4, 12:13 PM CT
Hines Ward is going to play with a chip on his shoulder this season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Ward said, "I'm always going to be that guy who played with a chip on his shoulder. I want to prove to everybody. I don't even know what I have to prove, but I want to prove somebody something. Even though we drafted (Limas Sweed), there's no hard feelings. I'm not mad at the organization or anything. They felt this guy could help us get to the next level and win a championship. If that can happen, why would I be mad at that? At the end of the day, Sweed is not going to change how Hines Ward plays. It doesn't bother me who they bring in. If he helps bring depth to our receiving corps and we go out there with a solid four wides, if he helps us that way to bring a championship here, hey I'm going to teach him all I can because I want him to go out and make plays."
Rashard Mendenhall, RB Saturday 5/3, 11:54 PM CT
Rashard Mendenhall injured his hamstring after the first day of mini-camp with the Steelers, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Coach Mike Tomlin hopes he will return when the Steelers resume their spring workouts in two weeks.
Rashard Mendenhall, RB Friday 5/2, 12:39 PM CT
The Pittsburgh Steelers where ecstatic about adding rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall, because they don’t anticipate the former Illinois star having as steep a learning curve as most rookie running backs, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "(Steelers running backs coach) Kirby Wilson and I both felt he might have been the most-ready-to-play guy of the top running backs because he can pass protect," Arians said of Mendenhall, who was the fourth running back taken in the draft. "That's usually the hardest thing for the young running backs coming out of college is having to block Joey Porter off the edge or those great linebackers they face one-on-one in pass protection."
Ben Roethlisberger, QB Thursday 5/1, 12:10 PM CT
Ben Roethlisberger is pleased with the Steelers' 2008 draft, and they notably granted his request to add a big and tall receiver (Limas Sweed of Texas), according to ProFootballTalk. He said, "I like the draft, we did a good job all around."
