John Madden is now working with New Jersey's first power-play unit, a major step forward for a player who has always been known as a defensive forward. Madden has four goals, two assists, and 21 shots in eight games this season.

John Madden left Wednesday's game with a groin pull, according to the Star Ledger. "It's a groin pull but not a severe one," Madden said. "I've never had one. I just know I didn't feel strong enough to finish the game. In the third period I took a pass up the middle and kind of got tripped up by a stick. I tried to get up quickly and couldn't." It's not clear how much time, if any, Madden will miss.

John Madden returned to action last night, wearing a mask to protect the facial injuries he sustained when hit by a puck on Sunday, according to the Star-Ledger. "It became his decision if he was medically cleared and felt well enough to play," coach Claude Julien said. "There was no way he wasn't playing. He played OK."

His face was swollen and bleeding after the game, so his status for this week's games is not exactly clear. "I'm sure I'm bleeding up inside and it's draining through my nose," Madden said. "Because of the swelling, my vision is affected a little down on the sides."
