Ilya Kovalchuk made clear his intention Thursday to play a full season in Russia, possibly as soon as Sunday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If he plays a game in the Russian Super League he won't be able to play in the NHL this season. "I haven't heard from [Thrashers'] management," Kovalchuck said. "I don't know [what is going to happen]. If they call right now and offer something, then maybe [a contract can be completed]. But otherwise, I'm going back to Russia."

Ilya Kovalchuk and the Thrashers remain far apart in their contract discussions, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail. Kovalchuk wants a long-term deal worth between $6.66-million and $7-million a season, and the Thrashers think that's too steep. Kovalchuk has threatened to play in Russia this season and is scheduled to play for Khimik of the Russian league next week.
