Because the Sharks were unable to trade either Evgeni Nabokov or Vesa Toskala before their opener against the Blues on Thursday, they had to place Nolan Schaefer on waivers, according to the AP. Any team could claim Schaefer, who won his first five starts for San Jose last season in limited duty, before Friday morning. If nobody picks him up, Schaefer would be assigned to the Sharks' top minor-league affiliate in Worcester, but that seems unlikely.

The Sharks recalled Nolan Schaefer from Cleveland of the AHL Monday to serve as Vesa Toskala's backup, according to the AP.
