It's been over six months since his chest was opened and his heart was the focus of major surgery, but defenseman and veteran leader Teppo Numminen is ready and cleared to return to the ice for the Buffalo Sabres, according to the Associated Press. GM Darcy Regier announced the 39-year-old Numminen was activated from the injury-suspended list and will be available to play tonight. Coach Lindy Ruff admits there are lingering concerns, but they are based more in his ability to play and not his health. "It's going to make us make a decision," Ruff said. "He's available to play. The thing I'm unsure [of] first of all, is the fact that he hasn't played all year. You can look good in practice, you could look good in one-on-one and two-on-two drills, but playing a game's a whole different story. We'll just go day-to-day with it." The Sabres are fighting to stay in the playoff picture, thus the decision to use Numminen is one wrought with worry. He hasn't played in so long, the team has to wonder if he is up to the challenge or would be best saved for a later date.

Top defenseman Teppo Numminen has reportedly rejoined the Buffalo Sabres and may soon be allowed back on the ice, according to SI.com. Coach Lindy Ruff said the training staff is evaluating Numminen's condition, but it was too early to determine whether he'll be cleared to play before the end of the regular season. Numminen had surgery in September to repair a faulty valve, which was discovered during a routine checkup ahead of his 19th NHL season and third with Buffalo. The Finnish player has had a heart murmur since childhood. He was diagnosed with a dilated aorta in March 2004, when he was playing for the Dallas Stars, and missed five games before he was cleared to play. Getting the veteran d-man back would be uplifting for the Sabres as the playoffs loom. We expect to hear official news on his playing status in the days ahead.

Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen will most likely miss the rest of the season after finding out that he will need an additional two months of recovery time after having open-heart surgery last fall. Numminen had spent the past month practicing with the Sabres, hoping for a return in the next two weeks, but during a checkup was told that his sternum hadn’t healed properly, and he needed more time to let him heal.
