Earlier this offseason he was passed through waivers and appeared to be headed to the minors or perhaps even to another league. However, he is on general manager Dale Tallon’s final roster heading into the regular season.

He has been given permission to find a place for him in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. If that doesn't materialize, though, Tallon said Khabibulin could still end up with the Hawks. Nikolai Khabibulin was forced to leave practice on Friday due to back spasms, according to a report on the AP. As a result, Corey Crawford was recalled from the AHL to backup Patrick Lalime. Lalime has been playing well of late and vying for the starting spot in net, and if the Bulin Wall is out for any length of time, Lalime could run with the job.

Nikolai Khabibulin dazzled Wednesday in his first start since suffering a knee injury last week, stopping all 38 shots in a 3-0 win over Minnesota. It was Khabibulin's first shutout of the season. Nikolai is certainly capable of nights like this, but he's still a below average fantasy option between the pipes.

Considered Chicago's goalie of the future, Crawford has a 24-13-5 record in the AHL this season with a 2.73 GAA and a stellar .911 save percentage. Chicago hosts Colorado on Sunday.
