Panthers coach Jacques Martin said yesterday that he doesn't expect Todd Bertuzzi to return to action until "sometime in February," according to the Sun-Sentinel. Bertuzzi is recovering slowly from his back surgery.

Panthers coach Jacques Martin said yesterday that Todd Bertuzzi could miss another one or two months while recovering from his back surgery, according to the Miami Herald. "I would think on a conservative side, where he's at with the rehab, it's anywhere between four to eight [weeks]," Martin said. "He feels better. Now it's a matter of doing more work in the gym, getting stronger, working on really strengthening the muscles."

The Miami Herald reports that Todd Bertuzzi has been cleared to resume light skating, perhaps as soon as today. It will be a while before he gets back in game action, though, as he will need to be cleared to practice and get into shape first.

It's been a month since Todd Bertuzzi underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back, but he still has no timetable for a return to action, according to the Miami Herald. "He had surgery and it's a long process," coach Jacques Martin said. "I still haven't gotten a timetable from the doctor. I'm going to wait and talk to the doctor. It's not right for me to speculate because I have no idea."

The Sun-Sentinel reports that Todd Bertuzzi is considering undergoing surgery to repair his ailing back. A decision likely will be made by the end of the week. The procedure would sidelined him four to six weeks.

The Miami Herald reports that Todd Bertuzzi is expected to be examined by a back specialist on Monday, and the Panthers are hoping for good news. The power forward took an anti-inflammatory shot Thursday. "He hasn't responded very well," coach Jacques Martin said. "We'll see where he's at. If he doesn't respond to the treatment he's been getting, we'll look at other measures."

In fact, he's expected to remain sidelined for at least their next three games due to his back spasms. Coach Jacques Martin said he didn't know the exact nature of the injury.

"I was coughing and spitting every two seconds so [the flu] didn't help. I'll take some contact and get the flow going. . . . I would like to get in and play with some of the guys to get the system down."

A CT scan Todd Bertuzzi received revealed only a contusion and not broken ribs, according to the Miami Herald. Bertuzzi is expected to return to practice as early as tomorrow. "He had some contusion, so that's good," coach/GM Jacques Martin said. "Nothing is broken. He's just very sore."
