Saku Koivu took part in last night's exhibition game and was hardly bothered by his injured eye, according to the Toronto Star. He needed surgery to repair a detached retina sustained during the playoffs in April. "There's less doubts now," he said. "This was the next step and I'm happy with the way things went. It will take some time before I'm 100 per cent comfortable and won't think about the eye, but I didn't feel I was lost out there. A few times, I had to look down for the puck, but that's something that's going to happen. With more practice, I'm sure I'll adapt to it."

The left eye of Saku Koivu has improved enough recently that the Canadiens think that their captain will be ready by training camp, according to the AP. "Pending continued improvement as judged by his ophthalmologist in Finland, it is our hope that Saku will be fit to report to training camp in September and resume playing professional hockey," team doctor David Mulder said. Koivu was injured in Game 3 of the Canadiens' first-round playoff series against the Hurricanes.

Saku Koivu has had enough improvement in his eye injury that he has been released from a hospital, according to the Montreal Gazette. However, it's not clear when he will return to game action. "Right now, it's in the hands of the doctors," Canadiens coach Bob Gainey said.

According to the AP, Saku Koivu will miss at least Friday night's game against the Hurricanes due an eye injury suffered when Koivu was accidentally hit with a stick during the second period of Wednesday's game. The full extent of the injury won't be known until more tests are completed in a few days after swelling around the eye subsides, but it is expected that Koivu will be out of the lineup for more than one game. "If he does come back, that's great, but we're going to go on with the playoffs thinking that he's not going to be there," Canadiens defenseman Mathieu Dandenault said.

Saku Koivu, who suffered an eye injury in Wednesday's game against Carolina, will be re-examined today by the team opthalmologist, according to the AP. "I really don't know any specifics and I wouldn't know how to explain it to you if I did," GM-coach Bob Gainey said. "When it's around the eye I think it's wise and prudent that all caution be taken." Koivu's status for Game 4 of the series tomorrow night is uncertain.
