Joe Nieuwendyk has been forced to retire due to recurring back problems, according to TSN.ca. He scored eight points in 15 games this season. In 1257 career games, Nieuwendyk tallied 564 goals and 1126 points.

Joe Nieuwendyk had his ailing back examined by a specialist on Tuesday, according to the Miami Herald. However, a timetable for his return has not been set at this point. "It's probably too early to say," coach Jacques Martin said. "We'll wait and see how he feels this week and, hopefully, there's some improvement."
