Doctors believe that Elias contracted the disease while playing in Russia during the NHL lockout. He lost 30 pounds and spent nearly a month in a Czech Republic hospital.

Patrik Elias signed his one-year qualifying offer with the Devils Wednesday, according to the AP. The deal will pay Elias $4.18 million for the upcoming season. He scored 38 goals and 43 assists in 82 games during the 2003-04 season.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has given Patrik Elias a one-week extension on returning his qualifying offer as the two sides negotiate a possible contract extension, according to the Neward Star-Ledger. "We have been talking and will continue to talk," Elias' agent, Todd Diamond, said. "We're both trying. The worst scenario is Patrik will play under the qualifying offer ($4.18 million) for a year."

The Associated Press reports that Patrik Elias contracted a severe case of Hepatitis A while playing in Russia during the NHL lockout. He recently returned to the United States following a month-long hospital stay in the Czech Republic. Doctors believe Elias contracted the disease from something he ate. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello says team doctors have told him Elias should be able to make a full recovery within three to six months. "I'm not going to rush anything," Elias said. "I'm going to take it easy. The worst thing would be overdoing it. I could damage my liver for life. Hockey's not on my mind at all."
