Jason Blake is a finalist for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, the AP reports. The award honors the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication. Blake was diagnosed in October with chronic myelogenous leukemia but still played in all 82 games.
The Maple Leafs have decided to fire HC Paul Maurice, according to TSN. "Since the season ended we've spent considerable time evaluating our organization and how best to move it forward," new GM Cliff Fletcher said. "Paul has been in a difficult position for several months. Making this decision now also provides the best opportunity for Paul to pursue all options potentially open to him."
Many believe that Mats Sundin's career with the Maple Leafs is over, but don't count his coach as someone in that camp, this according to TSN. "My feeling on him is that he's more valuable to this franchise today than maybe at any other point because he has to be the light for this team going forward." Toronto is a hockey mad city akin to New York for baseball, and as such every little issue is scrutinized. The bottom line is that the coach wants him back, Sundin wants to be back, and he can still score. So why won't he come back? The only answer would appear to be money.
