So Taguchi, LF, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 11/6, 12:16 PM CT
The Cardinals have declined a $1.1 million option on So Taguchi for next season, instead electing to pay him a $100,000 buyout. "We wanted to give ourselves as many options as we can, and by doing this we maintain a greater degree of flexibility," new GM John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Which is not to say we couldn't do something down the road. But for right now, this gives us flexibility."
Luis Castillo, 2B, New York MetsTuesday 11/6, 12:06 PM CT
New Astros GM Ed Wade plans to meet with free agent second baseman Luis Castillo. However, that doesn't mean the team is writing off Chris Burke as a potential replacement for Craig Biggio. "In our situation, we still view Burke as the heir apparent," Wade told the Houston Chronicle. "We would be comfortable with Chris in that role going forward. But at the same time, I just think it's incumbent upon us to look at the overall marketplace and see if there's ways to improve, as I said, at any position. We have to at least explore it. If at the end of the day we don't do anything else, I think the feeling internally and (among) people that know Chris a lot better than I do (is that we) feel that he's capable of being productive for us at the position. If that's the case, then I'm fine with that."
Andruw Jones, CF, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 11/6, 12:00 PM CT
Nationals president Stan Kasten met with Andruw Jones recently at Jones's Atlanta home, according to the Washington Post. The Nationals appear to be serious about pursuing a center fielder, as GM Jim Bowden contacted the agents for both Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand last week.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsTuesday 11/6, 11:53 AM CT
Jose Guillen bought thousands of dollars of steroids and HGH from a Florida anti-aging clinic and had some of the drugs shipped to the Oakland Coliseum, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He ordered more than $19,000 worth of drugs from the center between May 2002 and June 2005, according to the records. Guillen is a free agent, and this could obviously affect how he is pursued.
Akinori Otsuka, P, Texas RangersTuesday 11/6, 11:47 AM CT
Akinori Otsuka has resumed throwing for the first time in two months. Forearm tendinitis kept the right-hander from making any appearances after the All-Star break. GM Jon Daniels has said Otsuka hasn't had any problems with several sessions. "It's been encouraging," Daniels said in the Dallas Morning News. "Everything has been going well. Really, since mid-September, it's all been positive. It was just so late in the season that we wanted to be extra cautious." Assuming that Otsuka is healthy going into next year, there is a good chance he will be the Rangers closer.
Joel Zumaya, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 11/6, 11:38 AM CT
The Tigers have gotten some good news regarding Joel Zumaya and his surgically repaired right shoulder. Dr. Heinz Hoenecke reviewed images of the shoulder with Zumaya and his father Monday and said that he believed Zumaya will make a complete recovery, according to the Detroit Free Press. This does not change Zumaya's return date, which is expected to be around midseason next year, but the pitcher sounded confident in his ability to come back and be the same pitcher he was before the injury. "I believe a miracle happened," Zumaya said. "I have no doubt that we're going to be fine."
Aaron Fultz, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 11/6, 11:31 AM CT
The Indians have picked up a $1.5 million option on Aaron Fultz for 2008. Fultz's 2.92 ERA in 49 appearances this year made the decision to pick up his cost-efficient option an easy one.
Paul Byrd, P, Boston Red SoxTuesday 11/6, 11:30 AM CT
The Indians have exercised an $8 million option on Paul Byrd. Byrd won 15 games with the Tribe this year, but the decision to pick up his option comes as a bit of a surprise, given that he could possibly be facing a suspension for use of human growth hormone between 2002 and 2005. MLB officials, as of Monday, had still not talked to Byrd about his use of HGH, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Byrd told reporters he was using it for medical reasons.
Joe Borowski, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 11/6, 11:23 AM CT
The Indians picked up a $4 million option on Joe Borowski for next year. Borowski saved 45 games for the Tribe this year but was often skating on thin ice, as he held a 5.07 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. He will presumably be their ninth-inning man again in 2008.
Andy Pettitte, P, New York YankeesTuesday 11/6, 11:07 AM CT
Andy Pettitte declined his $16 million option for 2008, but he has not ruled out returning to the Yankees. "Andy reiterated that he wants to be a Yankee or retire," GM Brian Cashman told the NY Post. "He's just not ready to make a decision yet." Pettitte won 15 games and posted a 4.05 ERA in 36 games (34 starts) for the Yanks this season.
Curt Schilling, P, Boston Red SoxTuesday 11/6, 11:01 AM CT
Curt Schilling is returning to Beantown. The Red Sox and Schilling have reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth about $8 million in base salary and another $2 million in potential incentives, ESPN's Buster Olney reports. The agreement is pending Schilling passing a physical. The 40-year-old went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA in 24 starts for the Red Sox this season.
